Jinx wasn’t with the other kids. Amelia glanced around until she spotted her in the far corner. Jinx stood there all by herself, the chair next to her—the one meant for her parent—still empty. Every other child had someone sitting with them. Amelia’s heart twisted at the sight. No child should have to feel that alone.
Almost as if she sensed Amelia’s eyes on her, Jinx looked up. The moment she saw Amelia through the hallway window, her whole face lit up. She waved, grinning from ear to ear.
Amelia’s own smile softened, and she waved right back.
Just then, a familiar voice called from behind. “Amelia!”
She froze for a split second. Her smile faded as she turned to see Clive walking toward her, holding Penny’s hand. Ms. Arnold was with them, and she looked genuinely pleased to see Amelia.
“Mrs. Salmeron, I was just asking Clive why you hadn’t come today,” Ms. Arnold said.
Amelia caught the “Mrs. Salmeron” right away. So Clive hadn’t told anyone about the divorce.
She met Ms. Arnold’s eyes, calm and steady. “Actually, Ms. Arnold, Clive and I have been divorced for quite a while now. Please just call me Ms. Sadinton.”
“Oh—I see.” Ms. Arnold looked a little embarrassed.
Clive jumped in, his gaze fixed on Amelia. “It’s not like it’s been that long. If we wanted to get back together now, the law wouldn’t even count this as a real divorce.”
Amelia didn’t bother responding. She acted like he hadn’t said a thing. After greeting Ms. Arnold, she turned her attention to Penny—and was surprised to see the little girl wearing the dress Amelia had picked out for her. Was it on purpose? Or just a coincidence? Either way, it stung a little.
“Penny,” Amelia said with a gentle smile, about to say something more. But Penny looked away on purpose and tugged Clive’s sleeve.
“Penny, sweetheart!” Kristen scooped her up in a big hug, the two of them looking for all the world like a real mother and daughter.
Ms. Arnold cleared her throat, eager to escape the tension. “I’ll just go ahead inside,” she said, hurrying into the classroom.
Clive hadn’t expected Kristen to show up and his face went dark. He shot Amelia a guilty look, ready to explain.
“Amelia, it’s not what you think—”
Amelia cut him off, her voice cold. “Clive, I don’t care how much you love Kristen. Penny is your daughter. If you have even a shred of decency, keep that woman away from her. If you can’t, then give me custody. I can accept that Penny doesn’t love me, but I did not risk my life to have a child just so you and Kristen could use her to justify your disgusting affair.”
