Felix showed up with a bag of food in hand.
Ryan arched an eyebrow. “Appreciate it,” he said, his tone casual as he turned and walked inside without waiting for Felix to answer.
Inside, Amelia was at Jinx’s bedside. The little girl had just woken up, feverish and miserable, so Amelia gently wiped her face with a cool cloth.
“Mrs. Sadinton…” Jinx’s voice was weak and sleepy. “Am I still dreaming?”
“Nope, this is real. Here—see for yourself.” Amelia took Jinx’s hand and pressed it to her own cheek.
Jinx’s eyes crinkled into a smile. “Mrs. Sadinton, you really came!”
But her smile faded as guilt crept in. “I’m sorry… it’s so late. Did I wake you up?”
Jinx had always been the kind of kid who tried not to be a burden, way too mature for her age.
Amelia brushed the hair back from Jinx’s forehead and smiled softly. “You didn’t wake me. If you need me, I’ll always be here. Honestly, I’m glad I could come keep you company.”
“Really?” Jinx whispered, like she didn’t quite believe it.
“Really,” Amelia promised. “Let’s pinky swear. Whenever you need me, I’ll show up. Deal?”
Finally, a genuine smile lit up Jinx’s face. “Deal!”
Just then, Ryan and Felix appeared in the doorway and caught the two of them pinky swearing. Under the warm light, the moment felt extra sweet. Felix was about to say something when a sharp pain shot through his foot—Ryan had stepped right on him as he breezed past.
“Oops, sorry,” Ryan said, glancing back with a look that was anything but apologetic.
Felix just smirked to himself. Somebody’s feeling territorial.
Amelia heard the commotion and turned around, surprised to see both men there. She stood up quickly.
“Mr. Baker?”
“Uncle Felix!” Jinx’s whole face lit up.
Felix grinned and bent down to give her a hug. “Told you I’d come back with a surprise, didn’t I? I always keep my word.”
Jinx studied him, frowning a little. “Uncle Felix, you look skinnier... and tanner. Did you not eat enough while you were gone?”
Jinx was still too young to understand what Felix actually did when he left the country. All she knew was he looked different, thinner, with a rough patch of stubble on his jaw.
Amelia quietly stepped to the side. Suddenly, Ryan’s hand rested gently on her lower back. She glanced up at him, puzzled, but his face was as calm as ever.
Jinx looked up at Felix, wide-eyed. “Are you leaving again, Uncle Felix?”
Her hopeful gaze tugged at Felix’s heart. He’d spent most of his life coming and going as he pleased, never really tied down. But this time, he’d found himself thinking about the little girl waiting for him back home. That’s why, even with just a day free, he’d flown all the way back to Alson Creek.
After eating, Jinx finished her IV, and her fever started to go down. With Felix staying behind to watch her, Amelia and Ryan got ready to leave.
“Mr. Baker, we’ll head out now,” Amelia said.
“Ms. Sadinton,” Felix called after her, “Can I steal you for a few minutes? There’s something private I’d like to discuss.”
“Sure,” Amelia agreed right away, guessing it might be about Jinx.
Ryan’s voice had a jealous edge. “Is there something I can’t hear?”
Amelia smiled, squeezing his hand. “Stay with Jinx and cut up some fruit for her, okay? I’ll be back soon. Be good.”
Her voice was gentle, almost teasing, and Ryan clearly melted at her words. He shot Felix a look before letting go of her hand and settling by the bed to slice fruit for Jinx.
Felix noticed, frowning slightly. The way Amelia was with Ryan—and the way Ryan was with her—felt like something only the two of them shared.
He couldn’t help but feel a little regret. For the first time, he actually wanted to get close to a woman, but it was just too late. She already had someone by her side.
Felix quickly hid the disappointment in his eyes and led Amelia out of the room.
They walked together to a quiet little garden behind the hospital. The night air was cool, the moon shining down over the flowers and benches.
Felix got straight to the point. “Ms. Sadinton, I might be away for a while. There are two things I need your help with. The first is about Jinx’s parents…”
