The smell of food was what finally pulled Amelia from sleep.
She blinked her eyes open and saw Ryan’s back as he set down plates on the little table by the bed. He was still in his pajamas, and just seeing him moving around so quietly made her feel safe. Hugging her pillow to her chest, she watched him for a moment.
“Ryan…” she murmured. Her voice came out low and rough, full of memories from the night before. Embarrassed, Amelia’s cheeks heated up, and she yanked the blanket up to cover herself.
Ryan turned at the sound of her voice, and she caught a glimpse of the marks she’d left on his neck.
“Want me to bring breakfast to bed?” he offered.
She shook her head. “I’d rather have some water.”
He headed off to the kitchen, and while he was gone, she slipped into one of his shirts. The hem brushed her thighs—just barely long enough.
By the time Ryan came back with a glass of water, Amelia was already curled up on the sofa next to the table, eyeing the food. Ryan sat down beside her, and without saying a word, gently pulled a thin blanket over her bare legs.
“We should probably keep some of your clothes here from now on,” he said.
The way he said “from now on” was so natural, so easy, that for a second she actually believed they’d have a real future together.
“Ryan?”
“Yeah?” He looked at her, his dark eyes soft and full of something she couldn’t quite name.
She reached out and brushed his cheek with her fingers. “Once I finish this project at work, and after George tries out your new meds… can I move in with you? I want to help you get better. I’ll make sure you take your medicine.”
Ryan took her hand in his, squeezing gently. He didn’t hesitate. “Of course.”
A message with the address popped up a second later. Amelia quickly told Ryan what was going on and dashed off to get dressed. When she came downstairs, Ryan was already waiting for her, looking sharp in a white shirt, black trousers, and a trench coat.
He drove her straight to the hospital.
Jinx was hooked up to an IV, her cheeks flushed with fever. Amelia hurried to her side, resting a gentle hand on the girl’s face before going to talk with the doctor. Ryan leaned silently against the doorframe, watching for a moment before sending Amelia a message and quietly slipping out to get some food that would be easy for Jinx to eat.
He’d just parked and was heading back inside, food in hand, when a voice called out.
“Mr. Packman.”
Ryan paused and looked over his shoulder. Felix was striding toward him, looking travel-worn but sharp-eyed.
“Didn’t expect the first person I’d see after coming back would be you, Ryan Packman.” Felix smiled, a little teasing as his eyes landed on the bag of food. “Is that for Jinx? Never thought you had such a soft side, Mr. Packman.”
