Amelia stood there, momentarily stunned.
But she quickly realized Felix wasn’t joking. His sharp gaze darkened, and there was something about him—an edge, like he’d just walked out of a war zone, that made the air heavy.
Caroline had finally pushed him too far.
Amelia opened her mouth to say something, but before she could, a shrill voice pierced the tension.
“Felix, I risked everything just to see you! I would’ve taken a bullet for you! But you come back to the country and won’t even look at me, and now you’re here at the hospital for her?” Caroline’s glare was so fierce, Amelia almost felt it physically.
Caroline had chased after Felix to a war-torn place, wanting to cook for him, to wash his clothes, to be there for him. When she heard he was in danger, she’d run straight to him, not caring about her own safety—she’d have put herself in front of a bullet for him.
But Felix wouldn’t even spare her a glance. He’d had her tied up, thrown on a plane, and shipped back home without a second thought.
It was fine, Caroline told herself. She could handle Felix being cold. She was willing to work on him, to slowly thaw his heart.
But why did Amelia deserve his attention?
Caroline, shaking with anger, charged forward.
Felix quietly straightened, stepping protectively in front of Amelia. His brow furrowed as he spoke, voice cold as ice. “Have you lost your mind? Did the Salmeron family never teach you what shame is? And let’s be clear—following me overseas did nothing but get in my way.”
Felix liked to think of himself as a gentleman, but Caroline’s stupidity was pushing him past his limit.
“Felix, maybe I was a little reckless, but I just missed you so much! I was scared something might happen to you, that’s why I went…” Caroline’s eyes filled with tears. She bit her lip, reaching for Felix’s arm, but he pulled away, clearly fed up.
“You want to see me, so I’m supposed to just drop everything and do as you wish?” Felix shot her an icy look, his patience hanging by a thread. “You really think the world revolves around you, don’t you?”
With that, Felix turned and walked away.
“Felix!” Caroline shouted, trying to follow him, but Clive finally snapped. He yanked her back, his patience gone.
“Have you lost your mind?” he hissed, shoving her toward the driver. “Lock her in the car.”
“Clive!” Caroline protested, but the driver didn’t give her a choice, dragging her off.
Clive hurried to catch up to Felix and Amelia as they walked away.
“Wait!” he called out.
Felix, already a few steps ahead, slowed and turned with Amelia.
