Amelia barely glanced his way. “What do you want?”
Clive hesitated, running his tongue over chapped lips. “You’re not feeling sick or anything, right? I mean, if you’re not well, I can keep the kids with me for a while. I’ll look after them.”
These days, the only thing they ever talked about was the kids.
“I’m fine,” Amelia replied. “It’s Jinx. She’s running a fever, so I came to stay with her.”
“Oh, I see.” Clive let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding. So Felix wasn’t here for Amelia after all—he was just visiting little Jinx.
Clive kept going. “Penny and Timmy are spending the night at my place. Penny said she wants to sleep over at yours tomorrow. I told her it was fine. Is that okay with you?”
Felix, standing off to the side, almost burst out laughing. He could read between the lines—Clive was fishing to see if there was another man in Amelia’s house.
“You really don’t need to worry,” Amelia said, her voice cool as ever.
Clive almost relaxed, but then she added, “Ryan doesn’t just drop by my place out of the blue. Us dating isn’t going to affect the kids.”
Clive’s face froze. For a second, it looked like he might actually explode. He forced out a stiff smile. “Alright. I’ll come pick Penny up the day after tomorrow, then.”
Amelia didn’t respond. She just turned and walked away.
Clive watched her go, fists clenched so tight his knuckles turned white. Once she disappeared around the corner, he finally let out a shaky breath and headed outside.
“It’s fine,” Clive said, his voice low and hard. “Don’t worry about Kristen. If anything’s happened, someone will handle it.”
When he got back to the car, Caroline was sulking in the back seat. As soon as Clive got in, she was all over him with questions. “Clive, what did Felix say to you? Why was Amelia with him? There’s no way Felix would ever go for her! She’s divorced! The Baker family would never accept someone like that—”
“Enough!” Clive cut her off, voice icy. “Do you even realize Felix’s own mother was married once before joining the Baker family? He’s always been close to her. How dare you talk trash about divorced women in front of him?”
Caroline’s eyes went wide. “How was I supposed to know his mom was remarried? What now, Clive? Felix is probably mad at me. Should I go apologize and explain?”
She started to open the door, but Clive grabbed her arm. “Don’t embarrass yourself any further. It’s obvious he’s not interested. Have a little dignity, will you?”
Caroline pouted. “That’s not fair. When Amelia was chasing after you, she was just as clingy! My family’s better than hers, and I’m just as pretty. If she could marry you, why can’t I have Felix?”
