Clive was quiet for a moment before turning and walking over to Cameron. Michael almost jumped to follow, but when he saw Clive just drop down next to Cameron and clink glasses with him, he finally let out a sigh of relief.
Truth was, Michael hadn’t been wrong. It was just a woman. Once Cameron saw Kristen for who she really was, he’d moved on fast. Now, just hearing her name made him feel embarrassed.
Cameron shot Clive a sharp look. “You just came from Amelia’s place, didn’t you?”
Clive just frowned.
Cameron smirked, taking a long sip of his drink. “Man, the look on your face says it all. Let me guess—you tried your luck with her again and got shut down?”
“Just shut up,” Clive muttered.
Cameron swirled his bottle. “You’re something else, you know that? Back then, you barely even noticed her. Now you’re divorced and suddenly you can’t stay away. What’s the deal? You want her back or something?”
Clive tipped his glass back, swallowing hard. It took him a while, but finally he let out a bitter laugh. “I just don’t get it. She loved me for so many years. She gave me two kids. We haven’t even been divorced that long, and now she’s already with Ryan? How could she move on so fast?”
Cameron’s hand froze on his bottle and he frowned. “Wait. You mean Amelia’s really with Ryan?”
“They’re practically living together,” Clive said, voice tight.
Cameron thought back to the first time he’d seen Ryan, years ago overseas. His expression turned unreadable. “Well, better hope Ryan’s into her for real and it lasts. If they break up, you better warn Amelia not to get caught up in it. That guy—he’s honestly dangerous. The kind of guy who’d kill someone and not lose any sleep over it.”
He’d seen it once. Just once, but it was enough to remember for a lifetime.
“What are you talking about?” Clive sat up straighter, his cheeks a little flushed from the alcohol. He stared at Cameron, frowning. “You’ve seen Ryan do what?”
Cameron looked around, making sure no one was paying attention. The Packman family wasn’t to be messed with. He lowered his voice. “I met him once, years ago, at an underground fight club. The kind of place where rich kids bet on fights to the death. Most guys who got in that ring were desperate, hopped up on all sorts of illegal stuff just to survive.”
“Those guys were huge, practically monsters. But Ryan—he was different. He fought like he didn’t care if he lived or died. But he never lost. It was always the other guy who went down.”
Cameron shook his head, still a little spooked by the memory. “The crazy thing is, he seemed to like it. Like he enjoyed the whole scene. I was just in the crowd, but when he looked at me, I swear I felt it in my bones. I never thought the Packman family would have someone like that.”
“You still in school?”
“Yes, I’m a junior. Just working part-time, Mr. Salmeron.”
Clive leaned in, a little more interested now. “You know who I am?”
She nodded shyly. “I… I sent a résumé to Salmeron Corporation once, but I didn’t make it past the interview.”
“What’s your name?” Clive cut in.
“Liana. Like the flower.”
Cameron raised his eyebrows, letting out a low laugh. What a coincidence. Same sound as “Tang” in Chinese.
