The second Amelia walked out of the office, she spotted Ryan’s car waiting at the curb. He stepped out, looking effortlessly stylish in a simple, perfectly tailored charcoal coat—like he could walk straight onto a runway.
Amelia grinned and hurried over. Ryan pulled her right into his arms, giving her a warm squeeze.
“You’ve had a long day,” he said, putting on a mock-serious face.
Greg, who’d followed her outside, stopped in his tracks, totally stunned. “Mr. Packman? Amelia? Wait, you two—?”
Amelia looped her arm through Ryan’s and smiled. “Greg, let me introduce you properly. This is my boyfriend, Ryan.”
Greg’s eyes nearly popped out of his head. He almost bit his tongue in surprise.
Ryan reached out for a handshake. “Nice to meet you, Greg. Thanks for always taking care of Amelia.”
Greg shook his hand, still half in shock. “Mr. Packman, you’re too polite. She’s our Amelia. Of course I look out for her.” He shot Amelia a pointed look. “You really kept this under wraps.”
Amelia gave him a sheepish look. “I was actually planning to tell everyone today, but then I got pulled into this last-minute consulting thing.”
Just then, Greg’s face changed. He stared over her shoulder and muttered, “Great. Just what we needed.”
Amelia turned and saw Clive heading their way. He wasn’t looking at her though—his eyes were locked on Ryan.
Clive stopped in front of them and forced a polite smile. “Mr. Ryan Packman. Long time no see.” He really dragged out the full name, making sure everyone remembered Ryan’s background—as if being a Packman meant nothing if you were born on the wrong side of the family.
He held out his hand to Ryan.
The tension was instant. Greg could practically feel the sparks flying.
Ryan let Clive’s hand hang for a few seconds, then finally reached out for a quick, formal shake. “Long time no see,” he replied, just as polite but icy. “I heard your sister jumped out of a second-floor window chasing Felix and broke her leg? With all that going on at home, surprised you had time to come out.”
Amelia’s eyebrows shot up. Caroline jumped out a window? She glanced at Ryan, who caught her eye and, as if on cue, leaned down to kiss her forehead—like her surprise was really just an invitation for him to show her off.
Amelia was speechless.
Ryan looked at Clive, whose face was getting darker by the second, and his smile only widened. He turned to Greg. “Greg, I’m taking Amelia home. I’ll treat everyone to dinner soon—proper introduction and all.”
“Sounds good!” Greg replied with a grin.
Cameron, halfway out of his seatbelt, froze. “Clive…”
Clive cut him off. “I know exactly how good she is at her job. This is just business. I’m in it for the money.”
He sounded so matter-of-fact, but Cameron wasn’t convinced. “You sure this is only about the money?”
Clive let out a short laugh. “What, you think I’m still hung up on my ex? Amelia’s not that special.” He paused, his eyes drifting to a library card poking out of the center console. “There are plenty of younger, prettier women out there dying to be with me.”
That finally seemed to convince Cameron. “Exactly! You could have anyone. No point going back to your ex. Let’s go.”
Clive smiled, and the two of them walked into the restaurant.
The manager spotted them and hurried over with a big smile. “Mr. Salmeron, Mr. Henson, your private room is ready.”
Not far away, a pair of eyes watched Clive’s back, full of hope and excitement.
“Liana! What are you staring at?”
