This action took everyone by surprise.
Nicolas let out a cry of pain. His right hand hung limply at an unnatural angle.
“Wren!” Jasmine rushed to support Nicolas, shouting angrily, “Even if you’re the infamous Mr. Richmond that everyone in Ranard City fears, you can’t just do this!”
Especially not for Zoya.
Wren said coldly, “If you have anything to say, you can tell my lawyer. But anyone who dares hurt Zoya, I won’t let a single one of them go.” With that, he strode over to Zoya and, without hesitation, swept her up in his arms.
Her arm was injured, not her legs, yet he always liked carrying her like this.
“I can walk by myself,” she said.
“I don’t feel at ease,” he replied simply.
Zoya felt exasperated. ‘Seriously, what’s he even worried about?‘
After briefly instructing his subordinates and the orphanage staff, Wren carried her out.
Once they settled inside the car, Wren gently rolled up Zoya’s sleeve, his eyes going straight to the wound still seeping blood. “Does it hurt?” he asked softly.
“It’s fine,” Zoya replied.
But his frown only deepened, his expression pained. It was like he was the one who’d been hurt.
“Really, it’s nothing,” Zoya assured him. “By the way, did you really break Nicolas’s right hand?”
“Yeah, I did,” Wren said, his eyes fixed on her. “Are you mad at me?”
Zoya pursed her lips, and Wren’s heart tensed.
After all, Nicolas was once the man she had been willing to marry. Did she still have feelings for him? The thought stirred a slow–burning jealousy in his chest.
“Why would I be mad at you? Honestly, I can’t say I liked how you did it, but hey, I kicked Nicolas myself too. If I’m gonna blame someone, guess I’d have to blame myself first,” Zoya teased.
In that instant, the jealousy in Wren’s chest melted away completely.
“But what if Nicolas tries to take you to court?” Zoya asked.
“Let him try. It was just me ‘accidentally‘ breaking his hand. The Richmond family will, of course, cover his medical bills,” Wren replied smoothly.
Zoya mulled it over. He did have a point.
Besides, the Richmond family’s legal team was the most elite in Ranard City. Those guys didn’t mess around.
If Nicolas really wanted to suc, he’d be fighting a losing battle.
Back at the villa, Wren carefully tended to Zoya’s wound. “If I’d known they’d come after you, I never would’ve left.”
Zoya chuckled. “I’m not some fragile little thing who needs guarding every second. Getting my wound reopened was my own carelessness. Besides…”
She paused, then grinned. “I really loved watching you play chase with those kids. It felt like discovering a whole new side of you.”
“You like that version of me?” he asked softly.
“Yeah,” Zoya said, her smile warm. “But I like the way you usually are too. I just wish I’d met you sooner.”
Over time, she had come to understand that his cold and lonely demeanor was rooted in his family and his
past.
If she had known him sooner, maybe he would have been more open, freer. Maybe there would have been more smiles on his face.
Wren was caught off guard, gazing deeply at Zoya. After a quiet moment, he murmured, almost to himself, “Yeah… if only we’d met sooner.”
If that were the case, he never would’ve let any other man into her life.
He would’ve been the center of her world, walking her to school, joining her in the military, staying close through every mission. He would’ve made himself the one person she couldn’t live without.
But it still wasn’t too late. As long as he kept himself by her side and refused to let any other guy near her, he could make sure she was his and his alone.
**
Nicolas’s right hand was wrapped in a cast and bandages.
Jasmine said furiously, “Zoya went too far! She used Wren to hurt you! He’s just relying on his family’s money and power. Nicolas, we can’t just let this go!”
“Do you mean suing Wren?” Nicolas asked.
“Of course! He broke your hand! Don’t tell me you’re afraid of him?” Jasmine snapped.
In truth, she was angrier at Zoya than at Wren. If not for Zoya, she and Nicolas wouldn’t have been humiliated in front of everyone.
“If I actually sue Wren, that means I’m making the Richmond family my enemy for good,” Nicolas said
quietly.
He was pissed, but he knew all too well he didn’t have the power to take them on right now.
If he really went through with it, all his business partners would probably bail just to stay on the Richmond family’s good side. In the end, he’d end up losing way more than he’d ever gain.
Jasmine also understood it, but she was unwilling to let it go. “So what, you’re just going to suffer for nothing?”
“Suppose this is just what I get for hurting Zoya.” Nicolas gave a wry smile.
He might’ve scrubbed the blood from his hands, but if he’d known Zoya’s arm was already injured, he wouldn’t have touched her there.
Jasmine shot him a glare, her frustration obvious. “So you still care about Zoya, huh? Even after she framed me, you still pity her just because she bled a little?”
Nicolas said quickly, “I don’t. We were married for three years. I never wanted her to get hurt. But are you really certain she’s the one who sent those texts to the reporters?”
“Who else could it be? She was there when the island’s screen glitched and showed that fire report, and she turned up at the orphanage event too. You really think that’s just a random coincidence? She’s just jealous that I have you, so she’s always out to get me!” Jasmine fired back.
Nicolas went quiet, doubt creeping in. ‘Could Zoya really be behind all this?‘
“But if she’s just making it up, why accuse you of letting your colleague die? Does she… have evidence?” Nicolas asked.
“Impossible!” Jasmine shouted, her voice rising unnaturally.
Nicolas blinked in surprise at her outburst. She quickly realized she’d overreacted and softened her tone. “I swear, I never did anything like that. There’s no way Zoya has any real evidence. She’s just making up stories to ruin my reputation! Nicolas, you trust me, don’t you?”
“Of course I trust you,” Nicolas replied right away. ‘Yeah, what reason would I have to doubt Jasmine?‘ he reassured himself.
Jasmine smiled and leaned gently into his chest. “Then, since we’re together now, when are we going to announce our relationship?”
Nicolas’s heart gave a sudden jolt.
It hadn’t even been three months since the divorce. If word got out that he was with Jasmine so soon… people would have a field day.
