‘Is it because he’s older now that his reactions are different? Or could it be something else?‘ Zoya wondered.
Zoya could only learn from Gilbert that after his mother’s death, Wren suddenly lost control three years later when he accidentally caught the same scent of perfume.
At first, they thought it was just a random thing, but every time Wren caught a whiff of that scent, he’d lose control all over again.
He was diagnosed with a psychological issue by the psychiatrist, but after six months of treatment, there was no noticeable improvement.
Afterward, the Richmond family acquired the perfume company and destroyed the formula.
Unexpectedly, Daphne had this perfume.
Now, Zoya was starting to realize what Daphne was up to when she deliberately put it on.
‘Even Daphne herself probably never expected that Wren’s loss of control this time wouldn’t be to embrace her, but instead to choke her by the neck, Zoya thought to herself.
By nightfall, Zoya checked the time. Wren, after being injected with sedatives, had been asleep for over six hours. The doctor said he’d wake up in another two or three hours.
Just as she was about to go wash up, Wren’s desperate groaning suddenly echoed from the hospital bed.
“Don’t… don’t leave me behind… Please… don’t leave me…”
Zoya stopped in her tracks, her heart skipping a beat as she turned to look at the man on the bed.
Wren hadn’t woken up yet. His eyes remained tightly shut. But unlike before, his brows were furrowed now, and his head swayed faintly as if caught in a nightmare.
Zoya stepped closer to the bed and realized that somehow, a thin layer of sweat had formed on Wren’s face.
She lifted her hand to wipe it away, but just as her fingers neared his forehead, his eyes flew open, and those piercing eyes locked straight onto hers.
Zoya froze for a split second, and in that same instant, Wren’s fingers shot out, gripping her wrist tight.
The world spun as Wren suddenly threw Zoya onto the hospital bed, pinning her down.
He straddled her with his knees on either side, gripping her wrists with both hands and pinning her down
onto the bed with force.
Zoya frowned, trying to push him away when she noticed his vacant gaze, his eyes fixed on her yet unfocused, accompanied by labored, heavy breathing.
Even all ten of his fingers clutching her wrists were shaking slightly.
It was as if he was freaked out by something.
‘What’s got him so scared now?‘ Zoya wondered.
“Don’t leave me behind… It’s so dark. I’m… scared. Blood… there’s so much blood…” Wren muttered.
At that moment, he was just like a frightened kid, completely lost and crying out for help.
Zoya suddenly recalled her conversation with Gilbert earlier that day.
‘Maybe that perfume’s effect on Wren hasn’t worn off yet,‘ she thought. ‘Is he still stuck in that hellish nightmare, not even really awake?‘
“Wren, let go of my hand first so I can find a doctor to check on you,” Zoya said gently.
“No… I won’t let go. If I do, you’ll leave me behind. Everyone leaves me…” Wren muttered, his voice trembling. ‘Dad left me. Mom left me. Even the ones who always said they loved me end up leaving me, too,‘ he thought to himself.
“A useless tool like you has no reason to exist!” His father’s voice kept echoing in his ears.
‘Is that really it? Am I being left behind over and over just because I’m nothing but a worthless tool?‘ Wren wondered bitterly.
Zoya stared at Wren before her, his strikingly handsome face now contorted in a twisted, broken state.
‘Seriously, what kind of hell did he go through as a kid?‘ she wondered. ‘He looks like he was born with everything, like God’s favorite… At this moment, seeing him like this filled her with both pain and fury.
‘Looking back, I should’ve beaten his father harder. I didn’t hit him enough back then,‘ Zoya thought to herself.
“Wren, I’m not leaving you. Get this through your head! I said I’m not going anywhere, and I mean it! Not ever!” Zoya kept saying it over and over.
His lashes fluttered as if finally hearing her voice, his eyes regaining focus at last.
“Zozo…” Wren said, dazed, gradually snapping out of it. “Did I just lose control?”
“No, you only grabbed my wrists. You didn’t do anything else, and you didn’t hurt me,” Zoya told him gently.
Wren’s gaze moved upward, and he realized his fingers were still tightly gripping Zoya’s wrists.
Reason told him to let go, but he couldn’t bear to release his grip, afraid that if he did, he might lose her for good.
“I’m not leaving you behind, Wren. You’re my boyfriend now!” Zoya’s voice echoed in his ear.
He trembled, and at last, slowly, almost reluctantly, he released his grip.
Zoya’s hands were finally free, but instead of pushing Wren off, she hugged him tightly. “You were having a
nightmare, huh? Don’t be scared. I’m here for you. And next time I run into your dad, I’m seriously gonna deck him again!”
Wren froze for a moment, then lowered his eyes and smiled softly. “Yeah… You’re here.”
In that nightmare, everything was shrouded in darkness and splattered with blood, while shadowy figures all around kept leaving him behind.
He reached out to grasp them, but those figures walked away without looking back.
It wasn’t until Zoya’s voice gradually filled his ears that he felt as though he’d come back to life.
“Zozo…” Wren murmured, his voice thick with exhaustion as he buried his face in the crook of her neck. Thank you for being here. With you by my side, I’m not afraid of anything.”
The only thing he feared was that she would leave him.
So promise me, you have to keep your word. Don’t ever leave me behind,” he whispered, his voice drifting through the air like a solemn vow.
Wren left the hospital the next day, with his health pretty much back on track.
After his discharge from the hospital, his first order to Gilbert was, “Find out where Daphne got that perfume and destroy every trace of it. And if the Lucero family is still dead set on keeping Daphne at Lucero Group. then the Richmond family will terminate all future cooperation with them.”
The Lucero family certainly wouldn’t risk offending Wren just for a Daphne.
So, that would basically be game over for Daphne in the Lucero family.
“Have you seen a psychologist about your reaction to that perfume?” Zoya asked.
“Yeah, I have. Thought I was fine, but I guess I was fooling myself…” Wren muttered, a self–deprecating smile flickering I must’ve looked pretty pathetic losing it like that, huh?”
“Not pathetic at all. But promise me you won’t let those old memories keep controlling you,” Zoya said softly Tl be right here with you!
“Okay, he said quietly.
Zoya was unaware of the impact her words had on him.
Three days later, Zoya, Wren, and Harvey caught a flight back to Ranard City.
Eowyn showed up at the airport to pick them up, and when she saw the squad, she couldn’t help but feel like whistling.
Normally, just one of these two men would have women flocking, but now, Zoya had both of them walking by
her side.
‘Having too many handsome guys around but not being able to enjoy them is also a kind of tragedy, Eowyn sighed inwardly.
“How about we grab a bite first?” Eowyn suggested. It was already pushing six.
“Sounds good,” Zoya said, and the other two men naturally had no objections.
The four of them entered the restaurant, immediately drawing a lot of attention.
Especially Wren and Harvey. They couldn’t take a step without catching admiring glances from every woman
around.
The four of them sat down, placed their order, and soon enough, the food started coming out dish after dish.
As Zoya picked up a piece of fish and swallowed it, she suddenly covered her mouth.
“What’s wrong?” Eowyn asked, her voice full of concern.
“Just feeling a little queasy. Maybe that old stomach issue is flaring up…” Zoya said, but before she could finish, Eowyn’s next words totally threw her for a loop.
“Queasy? No way, don’t tell me you’re pregnant!” Eowyn blurted out.
Yep, Eowyn actually said that out loud.
Clatter! Harvey’s fork slipped from his fingers and hit the floor, his face frozen in shock.
Wren just gaped at Zoya in disbelief.
