Chapter 193
Not in Zoya’s wildest dreams did she ever imagine she would do this to Wren.
“If you don’t want things to get ugly, then stop trying to stop me from leaving,” Zoya said.
Wren stood there, paralyzed. All he could do was watch in a daze as she carefully packed every single thing that belonged to her into her suitcase.
As she dragged her suitcase right past him and headed for the door, Wren suddenly called out, “Zoya, I was wrong! I know I screwed up. Please, I’m begging you. Don’t throw me away.”
“Wren, you and I…” Zoya began, but before she could finish, a heavy thud cut her off.
Zoya’s words were interrupted by the sound of a heavy thud.
She spun around, only to see Wren had dropped hard to his knees on the floor.
“You…” Zoya stared at him in disbelief, never expecting that Wren would actually sink to his knees.
“You say you want me, so don’t just say it. Don’t walk away like this. I can’t handle it. I only messed up this one time. Is it really unforgivable? Are you really not giving me any chance at all?” Wren pleaded.
Zoya looked at him, her grip on the suitcase handle tightening. “But some things aren’t allowed to be broken even once, Wren. I guess I’m breaking my promise. I said I’d forgive anything that wasn’t a crime, but this time, I just can’t.”
With that, she turned and walked straight out of the apartment.
As the door slammed behind her, Wren felt the world collapse into darkness.
He thought, ‘She is not forgiving me, even though I only made a single screw-up.
‘I only made one mistake!
He’d already replayed that day in his head a thousand times and regretted not saving Oscar that day.
He wondered, ‘Why didn’t I meet her sooner?
‘If I’d met her five years ago, maybe I would’ve recognized her brother’s face back then.
‘If I’d met her brother back then, maybe I could’ve saved him. Maybe everything between us would’ve turned out beautiful, maybe happiness would’ve actually belonged to us.’
Even after Zoya left, Wren stayed on his knees.
Not until daylight faded into night did he finally stumble to his feet.
His right hand drooped uselessly, three mangled fingers twisted at unnatural angles, but he didn’t feel a thing. He just blankly scanned the apartment, then suddenly rummaged through every corner, searching for
anything she’d left behind.
She hadn’t brought much with her when she moved into the apartment in the first place.
Just now, she’d packed up absolutely everything, like she was determined that she would never come back.
Suddenly, he stopped in front of the bedroom nightstand.
He hesitated for a moment before slowly opening the nightstand drawer. There was a box inside.
He remembered that she’d once said this was supposed to be his birthday present.
She’d taken all of her things except for this. It was the only thing she left behind.
Wren lifted his left hand, trembling as he took out the box and slowly opened it.
Inside was a bracelet made of sandalwood and emerald beads, with a note on top.
It read: [Wren, may you be safe and well. May we stay by each other’s side, all the way until we’re old and gray.]
At the bottom, she’d signed: [Zoya Lucero.]
Wren stared at her words, his mind blank, and before he even realized it, tears began to silently fall and blur Zoya’s handwriting on the card.
Wren thought, ‘She wishes me to be safe and well and be with her for the rest of our lives.
‘But without her, how could there be any peace for me? Who’s left for me to grow old with now?’
It turned out that he wasn’t nearly as clever as he liked to believe. No matter how much he tried to plan or hide things, some outcomes were simply beyond his control.
He realized that in this world, some mistakes could never be made.
“Wren, you’re my son. Just like me, you’ll never be with the one you love. That’s your curse. You’ll be stuck suffering forever!” His father’s words echoed in his mind like a shadow that wouldn’t leave.
“That’s not me! I won’t be like you…” Wren muttered, pressing the card hard to his heart.
It felt almost like he was hugging Zoya.
Eowyn never thought she’d see Zoya turn up at her door in the middle of the night, suitcase in tow.
“Can I stay with you for a few days? These next few days I’ll start looking for my own place when I have time,” Zoya said.
“You can stay as long as you want, but why are you hunting for an apartment? You’re not living with Wren anymore?” Eowyn’s brow furrowed in confusion.
“No, I’m not,” Zoya replied quietly.
“What happened? Did you guys have a fight?” Eowyn asked, sounding casual.
It was hard for her to even imagine Zoya and Wren getting into an actual argument.
“We broke up,” Zoya replied quietly.
She’d gone to the riverbank first, sitting there until it got dark before she drove to Eowyn’s place.
Eowyn stared, jaw dropped. “You and Wren broke up?”
Eowyn thought, ‘Holy crap!’
Back when she first found out Zoya was seeing Wren, she’d been completely floored.
Now, after she’d finally wrapped her head around those two being together, they suddenly broke up.
“Who ended things?” Eowyn asked.
“Me,” Zoya said.
“No way. Wren just let you walk away?” Eowyn burst out, totally floored.
Anyone could see how Wren felt about Zoya, even Eowyn.
“It doesn’t matter what he thinks. If I want out, that’s the end of the story,” Zoya said.
“Yeah, but…” Eowyn suddenly cut herself off, staring at Zoya. “Hang on. You were just getting him a birthday gift!”
She thought, ‘They’d been so close, practically inseparable. How did things go from lovey-dovey to breakup just like that?
‘Everyone argues sometimes, but you guys seemed fine. How did it jump straight to a breakup?’
Zoya replied, “Our values just don’t match. That’s why it had to end.”
Eowyn caught the redness around Zoya’s eyes right away.
Zoya was keeping it chill, but Eowyn had known her forever. She knew that there was no way Zoya was actually fine right now.
Eowyn said, “Okay, you’ve still got your old room. I haven’t really messed with it since you left, so you can sort it out how you want. Just wait till you finally track down your brother across the border, then we’ll talk about finding you a new apartment.”
Zoya replied, “Deal. I’ll give you a thousand dollars a month for rent.”
“Please, you’re my company’s biggest treasure. Just generate more profit for me, then we can call it even. Think of this as your boss hooking you up with free staff housing,” Eowyn grinned.
“Thanks,” Zoya said. She then hauled her suitcase into her old room.
The next day, Zoya went to the military base and handed over the video she had of her brother to the authorities.
She hoped the military could help search for her brother over in Dracorialand.
At the same time, she was preparing to head to Dracorialand to see if she could uncover anything.
Just as Zoya stepped out of the military base, her phone buzzed. It was Gilbert, Wren’s personal secretary.
“Zoya, could you please come see Mr. Richmond? He’s broken three fingers and absolutely refuses to go to the hospital. I’ve tried everything, but there’s just no getting through to him,” Gilbert pleaded.
