Chapter 34

Nicolas’s heart skipped a beat. He wondered how Harvey knew about this.

“Jasmine’s mother got hurt suddenly back then–it was an emergency. I helped take her to the hospital, so I missed going with Zoya to pick up her parents‘ ashes,” Nicolas defended.

“Hurt? A sprained ankle counts as a serious injury? Seems your ‘friend’s‘ mother is far more important than your wife’s parents,” Harvey said coldly.

Most people present were shrewd. Having been in this circle a long time, they had never believed the “just friends” excuse.

Especially since Nicolas had deliberately hidden his marriage before, letting the world think he was single.

What’s more, the Crawfords were famously strict about marital loyalty. Infidelity was a taboo in their family, and Harvey loathed cheaters most of all.

So many looked at Nicolas and Jasmine with a hint of pity. They knew these two had come to curry favor with Harvey, but now they would be lucky if he didn’t outright detest them.

Sweat beaded on Nicolas’s forehead. Harvey was clearly younger, yet the pressure in his gaze sent chills down Nicolas’s spine.

“Dead people can’t compare to living ones,” Darren suddenly spoke up. “Picking up ashes is something one person can do.

“But a twisted ankle for Jasmine’s mother could be serious. Nicolas was just being kind.”

A cold light flashed in Harvey’s eyes. He stood up, walked directly to Darren, and said sharply, “What did you say?”

Darren, oblivious to the danger, replied, “I said dead people can’t compare to living. Zoya’s parents have been dead for three

years.

“Should Nicolas really drop someone who’s hurt to go with Zoya to pick up someone’s ashes?”

Slap! The sharp sound of a smack echoed. Darren staggered, nearly crashing into a nearby table. “Mr. Crawford, that’s going too far,” Nicolas said–after all, Darren was his friend.

Harvey’s face burned with anger. “Too far? I fucking think I didn’t hit enough.” With that, he lifted a foot and kicked Darren to the ground.

Darren struggled to get up, but Harvey planted a foot firmly on his chest, pinning him down. Nicolas stepped forward. “Mr. Crawford, what are you doing?”

“Doing? Hitting a bastard. Someone who says bastard things,” Harvey snarled. “Who the hell does he think he is talking about Zoya’s parents?”

“W–why can’t he? Are Zoya’s parents off–limits?” Darren gasped, still struggling. “What’s Zoya anyway? Married to Nicolas for three years, she just knew how to idle around,

“Anyone with sense knows Nicolas should choose Jasmine. Esteemed Mr. Crawford, surely you’re not believing some gossip and feeling sorry for Zoya? She’s not worth it.”

Darren pushed out the words, partly because he was Nicolas’s friend and partly to earn Nicolas’s favor. His small company relied entirely on bits of business from Nicolas to make money.

Harvey laughed, enraged. To him, Zoya was someone precious, a towering figure–and Darren was slandering her like that. What’s more, Nicolas, Zoya’s husband, didn’t refute a word.
