Jasmine’s face froze, her jaw tight. She wanted to fire back but couldn’t come up with a decent excuse.

Nicolas, face red with embarrassment, rounded on Zoya. “Seriously, Zoya? You put your friend up to this to make me look like an idiot in front of everyone?”

Eowyn didn’t miss a beat. “I’m tearing into you because I want to, not because Zoya told me to!”

Nicolas wasn’t having it. He was convinced Zoya was out to humiliate him. “What’s it gonna take to shut your friend up? You want me to make it up to you? Fine, just tell me what you want!”

Zoya looked at the man fuming in front of her, feeling the sting of his indifference–and his obvious concern for Jasmine.

‘How could I have been so dumb back then, thinking I could make this guy actually love me?‘ she thought to herself.

“I don’t want a damn thing from you,” she said, her voice steady. “I just want out.”

“Out?” Nicolas blinked, thrown off. Even Darren, standing nearby, raised an eyebrow.

“I’m quitting. I’ll turn in my resignation tomorrow, hand off all my work, and then I’m done with Mayer Tech. For good.”

She thought if she was getting a divorce, she was cutting every tie to Nicolas–clean and final.

Nicolas’s

eyes narrowed. “This about me not playing hero when the shots rang out? You’re quitting to mess with me?”

“It’s not a game,” Zoya said coolly. “It’s a deal. I walk away, Mayer Tech’s future’s got nothing to do with me, and whatever you and Jasmine are up to? That’s business.”

As more heads turned their way, Nicolas rubbed his forehead. “Fine, quit if you want. Take some time to chill out while you’re at it.”

Zoya didn’t bother responding. She grabbed Eowyn’s arm and walked out of the police station.

Inside, Darren shook his head, still reeling. “No way, she’s really bailing? Does she think she’s gonna land some hotshot job out there?

“Let her go,” Nicolas said with a shrug. “She’ll come crawling back when she crashes and burns.”

Jasmine smirked. “I can’t stand people who throw their job around like a poker chip. Quitting over some dumb drama? What a waste of that fancy National Defense University degree.”

Darren snorted. “Fancy degree? Big whoop. Out in the real world, she’ll be lucky to sling burgers or mop floors.”

Jasmine gave a smug little laugh. ‘Big deal, National Defense University. She’s just a jealous woman who clings to men.

‘Without a guy to lean on, she’s got nothing! Three years married, and all she does is coast at Nicolas‘ company. That’s why I can’t stand women like Zoya‘

The next day, Zoya broke the news to her project team at the office.

“Zoya, you’re leaving? Just like that?”

“What’s gonna happen to the project without you?”

The team didn’t know Zoya was the boss’s wife–only Nicolas’s secretary was in on that secret.

But everyone knew Zoya was a superstar. Every project she led came out golden.

Now, with a new lead stepping in, the team was on edge.

“Mr. Mayer will find someone to take over soon,” Zoya said calmly. She grabbed her printed resignation letter and headed to Nicolas’s office.

Nicolas’s face tightened. “Fine. Don’t come crying when you regret it.”

“Ow! Let go, you’re hurting me!” Violette whined.

Zoya dropped her wrist. Violette rubbed it, ready to fire off another insult, but Zoya’s cold, piercing stare shut her up fast.

A shiver crawled up Violette’s spine.

She didn’t say another word until Zoya was out the door.

Then, muttering to herself, she scoffed, “Scared of her? Please. Zoya’s all bark, no bite.”

A few days later, Eowyn whooped with joy when she heard Zoya had finally quit. “Hell yeah, you should’ve bailed ages ago!

“You busted your ass for Nicolas, and did he ever give you props? Nope. Without you, his company wouldn’t have gone public so fast.”

Zoya gave a small, wry smile.

“So, what’s the plan now?” Eowyn asked, leaning in.

“Dunno yet. Maybe I’ll head back to the military,” Zoya said.

“Forget that! Come work for me,” Eowyn said, practically bouncing. “I’ve been dying to get you on my team since you left the service. You were a freaking drone wizard back then. If you hadn’t gone all–in with Nicolas’s startup, you’d probably be running the show in that field by now.”

Zoya’s eyes drifted down. Drones had been her thing in college, and she’d tackled some killer projects in the military.

Even at Nicolas’s company, her last gig was pushing drone tech forward. Now that she was done with him, Eowyn’s offer was tempting.

“I’ll sleep on it,” Zoya said.

“Deal!” Eowyn grinned ear to ear. When Zoya said she’d “sleep on it,” that was basically a done deal. Snagging Zoya would be like drafting an MVP for her company.

Right then, Zoya’s phone lit up. She answered, and Violette’s bratty voice came through loud and clear. “Zoya, you still breathing? Get over here already. You forgot you’re supposed to take my mom to her doctor’s appointment today, didn’t you?”
