Chapter 91
Jasmine flushed with shame and anger. “Zoya, everyone knows I saved Nicolas. You can’t just discredit that by deliberately acting like this!”
“Discredit? You’re not even worth it.” Zoya dragged Jasmine back to the shore, then shoved her away.
Jasmine fell awkwardly onto the sand by the shore.
Sand clung to her skin, face, and hair, while her damp clothes added to her thoroughly disheveled
appearance.
Meanwhile, Zoya’s clothes were also partially drenched, yet she showed no sign of disarray whatsoever. Instead, she exuded an air of effortless composure.
“Even if you do this, it’s useless. Nicolas trusts me!” Jasmine quickly stood up and looked at Nicolas. “Nicolas, am I right?”
Only then did Nicolas seem to snap back to reality. Looking at Jasmine’s expectant eyes, he gritted his teeth and said, “Yes, I believe Jasmine!”
The truth was, he had already chosen to trust Jasmine long ago.
Jasmine breathed a sigh of relief, then triumphantly told Zoya, “You saw that, right? Nicolas trusts me. All you’re doing is making yourself look like a buffoon!
“And you’d better return the emerald ring to me quickly. Don’t be like a robber who only steals other people’s belongings!”
“Nicolas bought this ring with our shared assets during our marriage, so who’s the real thief here?” Zoya sneered. “Jasmine, I’m making this clear today.
“From now on, every time I see you wearing something Nicolas bought you during our marriage without my consent, I’ll
take it back!”
Jasmine was dumbfounded, not expecting Zoya to say that.
And after what just happened, she realized that Zoya was truly a woman of her word.
Jasmine wanted to say more, but seeing people around her whispering about her, she couldn’t help but shut her mouth.
–
After all, these pieces of jewelry were indeed gifts from Nicolas during his marriage to Zoya. No matter what, she was the one who was in the wrong.
Zoya walked up to Nicolas and looked at him calmly. “Weren’t you going to end things with me? Where are the wedding rings?”
Nicolas froze for a moment before slowly opening his palm.
The two cheap wedding rings remained clenched in his palm.
Zoya lowered her gaze to the wedding rings resting before her. A faint smile touched her lips.
It was a smile for the foolishness of her past self, for having ever believed Nicolas could be her true love, for pouring her heart into a man who’d never truly trusted her.
She reached for the wedding rings clenched in his palm and launched them into the sea with a single, swift motion.
The two wedding rings thus fell into the sea and were swept away by the waves.
“You… Nicolas hadn’t expected that Zoya would throw away these two rings just like that, without a trace of reluctance in her eyes.
It was as if she were tossing out trash.
‘So, what’s the point of me carrying these two rings with me all this time?’ Nicolas wondered.
Just then, Zoya’s voice slowly sounded in his ear. “Nicolas, this way, we are completely over.”
Nicolas suddenly looked up, staring blankly at the person before him.
Zoya turned and left without hesitation, not even glancing back at him.
Nicolas almost instinctively reached out to grab Zoya.
But before his hand could touch Zoya, it was swatted away by Wren.
“You no longer have that right,” Wren said, then followed Zoya and left.
Nicolas watched Zoya and Wren’s retreating figures, then his gaze fell to his own palm.
The two rings that had once been in his palm were gone.
An overwhelming sense of loss permeated his being, as if reminding him that he’d lost far more than just the rings.
Zoya’s clothes got a little wet, so she went to the changing room to change.
Fortunately, she brought spare clothes this time, so it wasn’t too much trouble.
As she finished changing and walked out of the changing room, she saw Wren still standing outside the door.
She then asked, “Why are you…”
“Waiting for you,” Wren replied. These three simple words seemed to represent everything.
“We wasted a lot of time. The groundbreaking ceremony is about to begin, so let’s head over there now,” Zoya said.
Wren nodded, and the two of them walked in the direction where the ceremony would take place.
On the way, Wren asked, “Have you really cut ties with Nicolas?”
“What else?” Zoya said. “Actually, regardless of whether I threw away these two rings, I’ve already cut ties with him.”
When she left the rings on the nightstand and moved out of the villa, it meant she no longer wanted those two wedding rings and had no lingering attachment to their marriage.
What she hadn’t anticipated was Nicolas actually carrying these very wedding rings to this place.
“Is that so? That’s good then,” Wren said, a faint smile flashing in his eyes, melting the coldness within them.
Meanwhile, Jasmine took a hurried shower and changed her clothes.
As she stepped out of the bathroom, she noticed Nicolas sitting on the sofa, staring blankly at his own palm.
“Nicolas, what are you thinking about?” Jasmine asked.
“Oh, nothing!” Nicolas came back to his senses, suddenly withdrew his hand, and, looking at Jasmine, asked, “Are you alright?”
“This is all Zoya’s fault. She practically wants me dead. Stealing the necklace before was bad enough, but now she won’t even spare the ring you gave me,” Jasmine said bitterly.
“I will buy you something better in the future,” Nicolas promised.
Jasmine’s expression brightened a little.
Just then, Nicolas suddenly asked, “Jasmine, why were you so panicked in the sea earlier? Aren’t you a good swimmer?”
Otherwise, she wouldn’t have been able to rescue a grown man like him from such river waters back then.
A hint of discomfort flashed across Jasmine’s face. “Are you doubting me? Do you think I wasn’t the one who saved you back then?”
“No, I’m not doubting you. I’m just a little confused,” Nicolas quickly said.
“It happened so suddenly, and I haven’t been swimming much during my years abroad, so it’s natural I couldn’t react immediately,” Jasmine said with a displeased expression. “Actually, if you truly have doubts, you don’t need to consider me your lifesaver.
“I told you from the beginning that I saved you not to demand anything in return for saving your life. What’s more, you had nothing back then!”
A look of guilt flashed across Nicolas’s face.
He couldn’t help but wonder, ‘What was wrong with me? I was actually wavering in my trust for Jasmine, all because of the scene where Zoya threw Jasmine into the sea.
Even though he kept telling Jasmine he didn’t doubt her, the truth was he did have doubts.
“I’m sorry,” Nicolas said.
“Forget it,” Jasmine said, feigning magnanimity. “You got misled by Zoya. On this trip to the island, let’s prioritize our main business.
“I heard from the Lucero family elders that the city government is very interested in your drone proposal and will likely cooperate with your company. You truly are impressive. Without Zoya, you’ll only continue to thrive!”
Nicolas pursed his lips uneasily. The drone proposal he submitted to the city government was based on Zoya’s original plan, which she had left at the company. The patent involved was also the one Zoya registered after their marriage.
