After leaving Zara’s room, I went to my study to arrange a few things before I started the preparation for her birthday.
The sunlight had begun to stream through the tall windows, warm and golden, coating the floor in soft patterns. It was one of those mornings that felt oddly quiet and peaceful, like even the pack house could sense the change in me.
For years, this day had been soaked in grief. Every hour of it felt heavy, like my heart was being dragged through the past. But not today. For the first time in five years, I wanted to feel something different: happiness. Hope. Life.
The stack of papers on my desk was waiting, neat and untouched from last night. I pushed them aside and reached for my coffee, letting the rich aroma fill the air.
The first sip burned slightly, but it kept me grounded. I needed that warmth, that reminder that I was still capable of moving forward.
I began sorting through the daily pack reports, signing a few documents, approving patrol schedules, and reviewing the trade letters from the neighboring packs.
It felt good to work, to keep my mind steady and focused.
For years, I’d hidden behind duty; now I wanted to use that same discipline to build something meaningful
for Zara.
An hour passed before I leaned back in my chair, stretching my arms.
I picked up my coffee again and took another slow sip. Then, reaching into the desk drawer, I activated the mind-link.
“Matthew,” I called out through the link, my voice steady. “Come to my study.”
It took only a few moments before Beta Matthew appeared at the door, looking slightly disheveled, like he’d been in the middle of his morning training rounds. He gave me a curious look as he stepped inside.
“This one you’re up this early,” he said, raising a brow. “And today of all days.”
I tilted my head slightly, frowning. “What do you mean by that?”
Matthew crossed his arms, studying me. “Ethan, come on. It’s Ava’s death anniversary. For the past four years, you never did anything on this day. You’d usually shut yourself in, refuse food, and block everyone out. And now you’re working? You’re even drinking coffee like it’s a normal day.”
A small, tired smile touched my lips. “That’s because I’ve learned to come over my grief,” I said quietly.
He blinked, clearly surprised. “You what?”

“I’ve made peace with it.” I continued. “Or at least I’m learning to. It took me long enough.”
Matthew’s expression softened. “I’m glad to hear that, Alpha. Truly.”

“Thank you.” I smiled faintly and gestured for him to sit. “Actually, I called you for something else.”
He leaned forward slightly, curious. “What’s that?”
“I need your help with a birthday preparation.”
Matthew’s brows furrowed. “A birthday?”
“Yes,” I said, my voice low but certain. “My daughter’s.”
He blinked. “Zara’s?”
“Yes.”
For a second, he just stared at me – and then a laugh burst out of him. It was loud and unexpected, echoing through the quiet room.
“What’s so funny?” I asked, half–smiling, half–confused.
“Ethan,” he chuckled, shaking his head. “You? Planning a birthday? You’re serious?”
“Dead serious,” I replied, smirking faintly. “I’ve learned that everything that happened… it wasn’t her fault. She deserves to be celebrated. Maybe the Moon Goddess didn’t want me to have a partner maybe that was my fate. But I have a daughter.
And that’s enough.”
Matthew’s laughter slowly died down, replaced with something softer respect. “You’ve really changed,” he said quietly. “I’m proud of you, man.”
I nodded, feeling a warmth rise in my chest. “Thank you. So, will you help me?”
He grinned. “Of course. I’ll get the omegas and decorators started right away. We’ll make it big deserves it.”
I chuckled. “It doesn’t have to be too grand.”

“Too late,” he said, already turning for the door. “Preparations for a birthday aren’t that hard. I’ll tell the maids what to do. Just leave it to me.”
“Thank
you, Matthew,” I said sincerely. “I don’t know what I’d have done without you.”
He waved a hand without replying and disappeared down the hallway.
The day flew by faster than I expected. The pack house came alive with energy I hadn’t felt in years. Omegas moved in and out of the main hall, carrying boxes of decorations – silver and lilac balloons, garlands of fresh flowers, and glowing fairy lights that wrapped around the pillars. The cooks were busy in the kitchen, the

Everywhere I looked, there was movement, laughter, and color. The pack members looked surprised – happy, even to see their alpha finally embracing life again.
By evening, the sun had melted into a soft orange hue, and the chandeliers in the hall glowed warmly. The decorations shimmered under the lights–white lilies, pink ribbons, and a massive banner that read in elegant letters:
“Happy Birthday, Princess Zara.”
My heart swelled at the sight.
Before heading to the hall, I stopped by Zara’s room to check on her.
The faint sound of giggles floated from behind the door, followed by the rustle of a dress. When I entered, one of the maids was kneeling to help her buckle her shoes.
And there she was my daughter, my little princess.
She looked breathtaking in her pastel pink gown, the fabric layered like petals, her dark curls pinned up with silver clips that sparkled under the light. She twirled once in front of the mirror, and the sight nearly took my breath away.
When she saw me, her face lit up. “Daddy!” she squealed, running toward me and wrapping her tiny arms around my neck.
I hugged her back, laughing softly. “Careful, angel, you’ll wrinkle your dress.”
She pulled back just enough to look up at me, her big eyes shining. “Do I look pretty?”
I smiled, brushing a loose curl from her forehead. “You look more than pretty. You look like a Disney princess.”
Her smile widened, a soft blush creeping up her cheeks. “Really?”
“Really
She grinned proudly, then glanced toward the mirror again. “I can’t wait to see my surprise.”
I chuckled. “You’ll love it. Are you ready?”
She nodded eagerly. “Yes, Daddy!”
I wheeled out of the room, and she followed me, her small hand resting lightly on my shoulder. The sound of laughter and music grew louder as we approached the main hall.
“Close your eyes,” I told her as we reached the door.
She giggled and covered them with both hands. “Okay!”

I nodded to the guards, who opened the grand double doors. The hall burst into color with balloons, flowers. lights, and the soft sound of a violin melody.
“Now.” I whispered. “Open your eyes.”
Zara gasped, her little hands falling from her face as she stared at the room. Her mouth dropped open. “Wow…” she breathed.
The hall was filled with guests, pack members, warriors, omegas, and even a few of her school friends, all smiling, and clapping as they shouted, “Happy Birthday, Princess Zara!”
She turned to me, her eyes wide and shining. “Daddy!” she squealed, throwing her arms around me. “Thank you!”
I chuckled, hugging her close. “Happy birthday, sweetheart.”
Her laughter was pure joy, like the sound of light itself.
The party began in full swing. Music filled the hall, children ran across the dance floor, and the air buzzed with laughter and conversation. Omegas served drinks and snacks, the scent of roasted meat and fresh pastries wafting through the air.
I stayed at a corner for a while, watching quietly, sipping my drink. It was overwhelming not in a bad way, but in a deeply emotional one. Seeing her smile, seeing life bloom again in these walls… it reminded me that maybe healing wasn’t forgetting, but choosing to love again despite the pain.
Beta Matthew passed by with a plate in his hand, giving me a knowing smirk. “Not bad, Alpha. You did good.”
I smiled faintly. “We did good.”
When the time came for Zara to cut her cake, the music softened, and everyone gathered around the large white table where a three–tier cake sat beautifully, decorated with silver stars and pink flowers.
One of the omegas handed Zara a small microphone. She blinked at it, unsure at first, but then looked at me. I nodded encouragingly.
“Say your wish, baby,” I said softly.
She took a deep breath, her small fingers gripping the microphone tightly. Her eyes found mine in the crowd big, brown, and full of love.
“I wish…” she began softly, her voice trembling just a little. “I wish my daddy will always be by my side forever.”
The hall went silent for a moment, and my chest tightened as warmth spread through me.
Then she added, “And I also wish that my daddy will be able to walk again.”
A collective gasp rippled through the crowd, and my breath caught. I stared at her, my heart twisting painfully not from sorrow, but from love so deep it hurt.

She didn’t wish for toys, dresses, or sweets. She wished for me.

She looked at me with those innocent, hopeful eyes, and I could only smile, though behind it, something inside me trembled.
Because as beautiful as her wish was, I knew the truth.
The second wish might never come to pass. Not when I didn’t even have a wolf anymore, not when I couldn’t sense the presence of the second chance mate who could heal me.
Still, I clapped along with everyone else, smiling as she blew out her candles, her face glowing in the flicker of the flames.
