To her surprise, Lance chuckled.
Annoyed, Jessica let go of the pole and started to walk away. It slipped and hit Lance squarely on the shoulder. He grunted in pain. "Are you trying to murder your husband?"
She ignored him. Lance was acting strangely today. He was unfamiliar, yet… he was also the kind of husband she had always secretly longed for.
Her heart was in turmoil. She couldn't let him shake the resolve she had worked so hard to build.
At the same time, she cursed him internally. Was it because they knew each other so well that he knew exactly where her weak spots were?
Jessica sat back down in her camping chair, her heart pounding.
Lance finished setting up the tent moments later. She realized then that he had tricked her; he hadn't needed her help at all. He had done it on purpose.
But what was he trying to achieve?
Lance returned and sat in the chair Amy had vacated.
Jessica didn't want to be alone with him without their daughter present. "Catherine took Amy."
"She's fine with Catherine," he said casually. "I trust her."
Jessica's expression flickered.
Lance seemed to realize his mistake. "I mean, Catherine adores Amy, and she's been a huge help these past six months. I just… I wanted to talk to you."
Jessica remained silent. This quiet, withdrawn version of her had become the norm since she’d left the psychiatric hospital, and it unsettled him. He had wanted her to mature, to be more sensible, but this new Jessica was emotionally draining.
"Jessica," he began, "you can be yourself with me, just like you used to be."
Lance shot up and sprinted toward the edge.
Apparently, in an attempt to save Amy from stumbling, both Jessica and Catherine had lost their footing and tumbled down the steep embankment.
When Lance arrived, a small crowd had gathered, helpless. Without a second thought, he leaped down.
He saw both of them below.
"Lance," Catherine said, her face pale, "get Jessica up first. I'm okay, just go!"
Lance's gaze fell on Jessica, who met his eyes with a cold, indifferent stare.
Just as he was about to move toward her, Catherine began gasping for air, her hands clawing at her throat. Her pale face turned a frightening shade of purple as she choked.
