Lance's expression changed instantly. "Catherine, you're having an asthma attack! Where's your inhaler?"
Catherine couldn't speak, managing only to point upward, indicating she didn't have it with her.
Without another moment's hesitation, Lance scooped Catherine into his arms. With no time to say anything to Jessica, he grabbed a rope someone had lowered and began the arduous climb back up.
When he finally reached the top, Melissa Gates burst into tears. "Catherine, are you okay? You wouldn't have fallen if you weren't trying to save Jessica! Why are you so kind? She needs to go to the hospital! Mr. Smith, please, take her to the hospital! We'll get Jessica out!"
Lance hesitated for a split second, but Catherine's condition was worsening in his arms.
"Make sure you get Jessica out," he ordered Melissa in a grim voice.
Melissa nodded frantically. "Don't worry, there are so many of us. We'll definitely rescue her."
Lance rushed Catherine to his car. "Amy, let's go."
Amy glanced back at the ravine, her lips pressed into a thin line, then obediently followed her father.
Once Lance's car was out of sight, Melissa waved her hand with a smirk. "Alright everyone, show's over! I've already called the fire department. They'll be here soon. You can all go back to what you were doing."
After the crowd dispersed, Melissa crouched at the edge of the ravine and peered down. "Jessica Brown, did you ever think you'd end up in my hands?"
Jessica sat at the bottom of the ravine, her recently healed ankle already swelling again. She ignored the voice from above.
Her silence only fueled Melissa's rage. She grabbed two buckets of water and dumped them over the edge. In an instant, Jessica was soaked to the bone, looking like a drowned rat.
"Go on, Jessica Brown," Melissa sneered. "Beg me. If I'm in a good mood, maybe I'll get you out."
Jessica remained silent.
