Who would have thought that the man who had abandoned her without a second thought was the same man who, just half an hour earlier, had promised things would get better?
Better? There was no "better" for them. They had no future.
She closed her eyes, and two hot tears escaped from the corners, tracing paths down her temples.
That was it. They were truly over. This time, she had to break with the past for good.
...
Lance couldn't get a hold of Jessica. He paced anxiously in the hospital room.
"Lance, I told you to save Jessica first," Catherine said, her eyes red. "You wouldn't listen."
"You're the one with health problems," Lance reassured her. "She's strong. She'll be fine. She's probably just angry and ignoring my calls on purpose. I'll have my assistant go look for her."
"Wait," Catherine said. "Let me call Melissa and ask."
Lance agreed.
Catherine dialed Melissa Gates. "Melissa, do you know where Jessica is? Lance is with me, and he can't reach her. He's really worried."
"I have no idea," Melissa replied quickly. "I called the fire department to rescue her right after you left. They're usually very fast, so she must have been rescued a while ago."
After hanging up, Catherine said in a gentle voice, "See? Melissa confirmed it. You don't have to worry. It's probably just like you said—Jessica's angry and giving you the silent treatment."
Lance frowned. "She's never been like this before. Ever since she got out of that hospital, her temper has gotten worse."
Catherine smiled faintly. "And you were so worried she was being mistreated there. If she had really suffered, would she have the energy to be this dramatic?"
"You're right," Lance conceded. "I was overthinking it."
Catherine handed her a glass of water. "Have a drink first."
Amy took the glass and gulped down half of it. "Let's play, Mom Catherine!"
Meanwhile, Lance arrived at his company and went straight to the top-floor office.
He saw Jessica standing there, an IV port still taped to the back of her hand. His brow furrowed instantly. "What happened to you?"
Jessica placed a file on his desk. "I'm not sure if you received the last set of divorce papers, so I brought you another one personally. Sign it, Lance."
He stared at the bold words on the cover: DIVORCE AGREEMENT.
A divorce agreement from her.
His eyes began to sting. "You're getting more and more out of control, Jessica. Is this because I saved Catherine first yesterday? She was having an asthma attack, it could have been fatal. In that situation, what was more important?"
