"Making Jessica kneel and crawl is an insult to the entire Smith family," Lance said flatly.
Catherine let out a soft sigh. "But have you considered that Jessica did push Melissa into the water? If you retaliate against the Gates family, the reputation you've spent years building will be ruined. Lance, if not for yourself, think about Amy. The whole community will say you're unreasonable. Who would let their children play with Amy, afraid that if their child got into a spat, you'd come after their whole family? You can't give people ammunition against you. I know you want to stand up for Jessica, but there are other ways. Please, just listen to me this once."
Lance remained silent.
"Jessica is trying to divorce you right now," Catherine continued. "If you protect her like this, she'll think she has you wrapped around her finger, and she'll be even less likely to come back."
A flicker of change crossed Lance's expression. He gave a silent, reluctant nod.
"Great!" Catherine said, brightening. "Should you call Jessica, or should I?"
"You do it," he said.
Catherine dialed Jessica's number. "Jessica, it's Catherine. I just came from the Gates estate. Melissa said that as long as you go over and apologize in person, she won't press charges."
Jessica let out a cold laugh. "Catherine Brown, you're the walking embodiment of hypocrisy."
Catherine had the call on speaker. At Jessica's words, she glanced at Lance, her lip trembling and her eyes turning red. "Jessica, I really did speak up for you. I spent a long time persuading Melissa. Otherwise, she was going to sue you. I'm just trying to help."
"Save it," Jessica retorted. "That act only works on Kevin Brown and Lance Smith. Are you trying to be a saint or just a doormat?"
Suddenly, Lance's voice cut in, sharp and angry. "Jessica Brown, do you have any idea how much trouble Catherine has gone through for you? And you can't even appreciate it. Have you lost your conscience?"
"Did I ask for her help?" Jessica shot back with a laugh.
