Jessica shook her head, her voice weak. "How did I get here?"
"A gentleman brought you in last night," the nurse explained. "Dr. White handled your case personally."
"Where is the person who brought me?" Jessica asked.
"He just got a phone call and had to leave," the nurse said. "A very handsome man. A friend of yours, I assume? He stayed with you all night."
Jessica had a good idea who it was. She swallowed, her throat feeling like she'd swallowed glass shards. "My friend..."
The nurse understood immediately. "Your friend who came in with you had her stomach pumped last night. She's in the room next door. She was still asleep when I gave her an IV a little while ago."
Just as she finished speaking, a loud, angry voice erupted from the next room. Jessica frowned and tried to get up. "I need to see her."
"Hey, wait!" the nurse called after her. "You haven't finished your IV!"
Jessica stepped out of her room just in time to see a middle-aged woman with a perm, holding a baby, standing in the doorway of the next room, screaming at Emily. "You're out all night messing around with other men, and now you're in the hospital! Your son is at home starving! Is this how you act like a mother?"
A younger man, likely Emily's husband, stood next to the woman, tugging at her arm. "Mom, keep your voice down."
The old woman shook him off, her voice growing even louder. "I told you your wife was trouble! Who leaves their three-month-old baby to go back to work? She's just restless! I told you, you need to be firm with her, but you never listen. And now look! She's in the hospital after a night of drinking and fooling around!"
Jessica's face darkened. She was about to step in when Emily emerged from the room. "Are you done?"
