The nurse led Jessica back to her room to finish her IV. "Is the woman in the next room your friend?" she asked, unable to contain her curiosity.
"She's my boss."
"Her mother-in-law is horrible. And her husband is completely spineless. It's disgusting."
Jessica nodded in agreement.
"It's always the same for us women," the nurse continued, her voice filled with righteous anger. "If we go back to work after having a baby, they say we're neglecting our family. If we stay home, they call us useless parasites. You know what? Women shouldn't even exist. Let three men form a family—one dad, one mom, and one son. At least that would solve the problem of all the single men who can't find wives!"
Jessica managed a weak smile.
"Alright, that's done," the nurse said. "Call me if you need anything. I'll be at the nurses' station. Just press the button."
Jessica nodded. The nurse left, and Jessica closed her eyes, thinking about Emily's predicament. It seemed that no matter how different their circumstances were, women always ended up facing the same struggles.
A short while later, Nathan White came in.
"Dr. White," Jessica said, her voice still hoarse.
He sat down in the chair by her bed. "How are you feeling?"
"Much better. Where's George?"
Nathan raised an eyebrow. "Who told you it was George who brought you here?"
"He's the only friend I have," Jessica said with a bitter smile.
"He's at the George Estate," Nathan said. "Last night, to save you, he crippled Lawrence Harris. The Harris family found out George works for Mr. George and went straight to him to complain. George was summoned home first thing this morning."
A knot of fear tightened in Jessica's stomach. "Will George be in trouble?"
