A short while later, Rebecca arrived at the hospital room. "What's the deal between you and that bodyguard?"
"We're friends," Jessica said simply. "He's helped me a lot."
Rebecca looked skeptical but didn't press the issue. "I know a secret, but I don't have any proof."
"Tell me," Jessica urged.
Rebecca took a deep breath. "Lawrence Harris and Melissa Gates used to date."
Jessica sat bolt upright. "But they're cousins!"
Rebecca nodded, a complicated expression on her face. "It was the summer after Melissa graduated high school. I had a fight with my dad and ran out of the house in the middle of the night. I saw them kissing behind the rock garden in The Kensington. It freaked me out, and I ran straight home." She sighed. "It was so long ago. There's probably no evidence left."
Jessica's eyes narrowed. "As long as the people involved are still around, there's always evidence. I think I can get Melissa to talk."
Rebecca stared at her. She never thought the day would come when she would be sitting here, calmly helping the very woman she had always been so desperate to surpass. The world truly was a strange place.
"Thank you, Rebecca," Jessica said sincerely.
"It's nothing," Rebecca mumbled, looking away uncomfortably.
…
Melissa was surprised when Jessica asked to meet her. She didn't want to go, but her curiosity got the better of her. She had to know what Jessica wanted.
Jessica was sitting in a café, still wearing her hospital gown. Melissa arrived shortly after, dressed to the nines, a stark contrast to Jessica's disheveled state.
Jessica's eyes swept over Melissa. "It seems you really don't have any feelings left for Lawrence Harris."
