On the Ruins of His Regret I Soar novel Chapter 152

“That’s right!” Helen said excitedly. “Your mommy and daddy are going to give you a little brother or sister.”

Amy’s eyes lit up. “Really? I want to be a big sister! I want one brother and three sisters!”

Helen chuckled and pinched her cheek. “Alright, alright. You can tell your daddy that yourself tonight, okay?”

Amy nodded enthusiastically.

Helen sighed with relief. Perhaps another child was exactly what they needed to fix their broken family.

In the car, Catherine stared ahead, her expression somber. “Lance, the reason I’ve stayed so close to you is twofold. First, I believe we’re kindred spirits, confidants. It has nothing to do with romance; it’s just that our hearts resonate on the same frequency.

“Second, I adore Amy. I know what it’s like to grow up without a father’s love, and I feel for any child who has to go through that. When Jessica isn’t around, I want to make sure Amy still feels a mother’s love. Children thrive when they’re surrounded by love.

“And third, I’ll admit, I have my own selfish reasons. I was worried another woman might try to use Amy to get close to you. No matter what, I’m still technically Jessica’s family. I wanted to help protect what you two have. But now… now I feel like I’ve made a terrible mistake. I shouldn’t have gotten involved. Helen thinks I have ulterior motives. All my good intentions have been misunderstood, and Lance… it hurts.”

Lance, sitting in the passenger seat, nodded. “I know. I understand. I won’t let Helen speak to you like that again. I see everything you do for me and for Amy, Catherine.”

She looked at him, her eyes glistening with tears. “So we’ll always be friends?”

He nodded again.

A tearful smile touched her lips. “Lance, you have no idea how hard it is to be your friend.”

George’s face hardened. “Get out.”

The man hesitated, caught between a rock and a hard place.

Seeing his hesitation, George’s gaze turned icy. “I said, get out.”

Frank turned to the man. “Bryan, why don’t you wait outside? This is just company business.”

Bryan nodded gratefully and scurried out of the room. Frank sat on the edge of the bed and saw the crisscrossing welts on George’s back. He winced. “Are you sure you don’t want a doctor to look at that?”
