“I did it because I knew how much you wanted a child,” Willie explained. “I just listened to Isabella. It was for us. And I’m the future head of the Brown family. What would happen to our legacy if we didn’t have a child?”
Lillian’s laugh was wet with tears. “Then go on, keep making heirs for the Brown family with Isabella’s niece. I wish you a long line of descendants.”
Willie turned to face her. “You know I only love you. Yes, I slept with another woman, but I was thinking of your face, your body, the entire time. That’s the only way I could go through with it. I’ve been so faithful to you in my heart, what more could you possibly want?
“Lillian, we’ve been married for ten years. Everyone knows how well I treat you, how I’ve always cherished you. My feelings for you have never changed. But how have you treated me?
“Did you not know how much I’ve longed for a child? Did you not know how important a child is to me? Yet the moment you found out you were pregnant, you got rid of it without a second thought. Did you ever consider my feelings? Did you ever care what I thought?
“Lillian, I admit I was wrong in this, but are you completely blameless? You sentenced me to death without a fair trial. You sentenced our child to death. That was a living, breathing life.”
Lillian was too exhausted to speak.
Just then, Lance walked in. “I bought some things for Lillian.” He set them down.
Willie’s face was ashen. He nodded, his voice tired. “Fine. I understand.”
He took a deep breath and turned away. Suddenly, he pulled a fruit knife from the gift basket. He stared at Jessica, raised the knife, and lunged straight for her, his eyes blazing with murderous intent.
Lance’s eyes widened in horror. “Willie!”
It happened too fast. Before Jessica could react, George yanked her out of the way, her body crashing into his. The fruit knife slashed past, grazing George’s arm. Willie, thrown off balance by the sudden miss, stumbled forward.
