It was Amy.
Jessica immediately stood up and went to her, leading her into the room.
Amy’s eyes were fixed on George.
George frowned at the uninvited little guest. He wasn’t particularly fond of children, but Amy was a miniature version of Jessica. Looking at her was like looking at Jessica as a child. He didn’t like it, but he couldn’t bring himself to dislike her either.
He lowered his gaze.
“What are you staring at?” Jessica chided gently. “Say hello.”
Amy didn’t speak. She sat down like a little princess and announced in a high-pitched voice, “They said this is your paramour. I came to see what a paramour looks like.”
Jessica was mortified. She pulled her daughter up to stand in front of her. “Stand up straight.”
Amy instinctively straightened her posture.
“Who told you to say that?” Jessica demanded, her voice sharp with anger.
Amy pressed her lips together and said nothing.
Jessica looked at her daughter with a sense of exasperated disappointment. “If you don’t tell me, I’m going to spank you.”
Amy quickly covered her bottom. “The nannies said it! They were whispering when they brought my dinner, and I heard them. I just wanted to see what your paramour looked like.”
“Don’t you ever use that word again,” Jessica said angrily. “Do you have any idea how rude that is?”
At her words, Amy flinched and began to cry even louder.
“I think I hear it coming from in here.”
The door swung open, and Catherine Brown walked in.
The moment Amy saw her, her wails intensified as if her rescuer had arrived. “Mommy Catherine, this bad woman hit me! Waaah, you have to get revenge for me!”
Lance Smith followed close behind Catherine. Seeing his daughter sobbing uncontrollably, he immediately blamed Jessica. “What did you do to Amy now?”
Amy choked out her complaint. “Mommy hit me! Daddy, she hit me! My bottom hurts so much! You and Great-Grandma never hit me!”
Lance took a deep breath, trying to stay calm. “Don’t you think you owe me an explanation?”
