On the Ruins of His Regret I Soar novel Chapter 213

Lance grabbed her wrist and pulled her inside.

“Let go of me, Lance!” Jessica struggled. “Let go!”

Helen heard the commotion and rushed out from the kitchen.

“This doesn’t concern you,” Lance said without looking at her. “Go back to your work. Stay out of the living room.”

Helen thought Lance was being unreasonable, but her own son worked for him. With a long sigh and a worried glance at Jessica, she retreated.

Jessica continued to push against him, her hair falling into her face, making her look disheveled and frantic.

Lance held her fast by the waist. “The divorce announcement placated the shareholders. Whether we actually go through with it isn’t important anymore.”

Jessica stopped struggling and stared at him, a look of disbelief on her face. “You think I’m divorcing you to save your company?”

“I know that’s not why,” he said, his voice softening. “I’m just saying we don’t need to get divorced anymore.”

Jessica looked him straight in the eye. “Do I need to repeat myself? We are getting divorced because there is nothing left between us. We’ve reached the end. We cannot continue as husband and wife. It has nothing to do with your company or your shareholders. I want a divorce.”

Lance’s expression darkened, and he didn't speak for a long time.

Jessica’s voice was laced with ice. “Lance, what do you think the shareholders would do if it got out that you’re the one refusing to divorce?”

Lance was the first to break the silence. “Amy’s school is holding parent interviews tomorrow. After the interview, I will go with you to file the papers again.”

Jessica nodded. “You said it. I expect you to keep your word this time. Lance, you were a terrible husband. Don’t be a terrible person, too.”

Without another word, she turned and left, slamming the door behind her. The sound echoed through the house, feeling like a slap across Lance’s face. His cheeks burned with a phantom sting.

Helen crept out of the kitchen. “I’ll… I’ll go check on Amy.” She hurried upstairs.

Lance went down to the wine cellar, opened a bottle of red wine, and started drinking alone.

He was still there when Catherine arrived, wearing a sky-blue dress. Jessica used to love that color. She said it was the color of freedom, of endless possibilities.
