On the Ruins of His Regret I Soar novel Chapter 217

Lance remained silent.

“I brought her last fall,” Jessica explained in a soft, steady voice, “but she was just under three and a half, a bit too young. She missed me too much and would cry in the classroom. I couldn’t bear it, so I took her home. The plan was to try again after the new year, but some things came up, and it got pushed back until now.”

The headmaster nodded and looked at Lance. “Are you aware of your child’s vaccination status?”

Lance instinctively glanced at Jessica. She kept her eyes fixed forward. This was a question for the father, and she had no intention of rescuing him. They were, for all intents and purposes, no longer connected.

A faint blush crept up Lance’s neck. “Well, I… my wife handles all of that at home. We have a fairly traditional household, where I work and she manages the family. My wife is very capable.”

The headmaster smiled. “So, the mother is a full-time homemaker?”

“I was,” Jessica answered truthfully. “I stayed home with our daughter after she was born, but I’ve recently found a job and will be starting in a few days.”

After a few more questions, which Jessica answered with ease, the headmaster asked, “And how is your relationship with each other?”

“It’s very good,” Lance answered quickly.

Jessica shot him a look before answering honestly. “We are in the process of getting a divorce. However, even after we separate, we will always be her parents. We are both committed to fulfilling our parental duties and will not let our failed marriage affect our roles in her life.”

“May I ask the reason for the failure of the marriage?” the headmaster inquired.

Jessica nodded earnestly.

They filed the application for a second time.

As soon as they were outside, Jessica got into her car. Lance tapped on the window, and she rolled it down.

“It’s Amy’s first day of school,” he said, his eyes pleading. “Let’s have dinner together tonight to celebrate.”

The old Jessica had been all about celebrating milestones. Amy’s first tooth, her first steps, the first poem she memorized—every little thing was an occasion. She would always tell Lance to come home early so they could celebrate as a family.
