Back then, Lance had found it all so childish and unnecessary. Now, he was clinging to that same flimsy excuse just to have one more meal with her.
Jessica smiled faintly. “Amy needs to get used to having meals without both of her parents there. You’ve done a good job of that over the last six months. Let’s not go backward. I have to go.”
Her car sped away, brushing past him as it went.
Lance stood there, a solitary, dejected figure. He regretted everything.
That evening, Lance had Aaron James pick up Amy from school while he went out drinking with a group of friends.
“So, you and Jessica Brown are really divorced?” a friend named Dylan asked. “You’re getting the final papers soon, right?”
Lance didn’t answer.
Dylan chuckled. “Must have been tough getting her to agree. She followed you around like a puppy dog since we were kids. Whenever we caught her, she’d just blush and smile. She’s gorgeous, but man, was she desperate. And guys always want the one they can’t have, right?”
“I wouldn’t say that,” another friend, Eugene, chimed in. “If Jessica Brown had been chasing any of you, you would’ve been on your knees proposing in a heartbeat. I heard her mother was a legendary beauty, and Jessica got her looks.”
Dylan nudged Eugene. “Hey, didn’t you have a secret crush on her in high school? I never told anyone this, but I once used your phone to call my parents and saw your photo gallery was filled with pictures of her.”
Eugene’s face paled, and he shot a nervous glance at Lance. “Shut up, man, don’t talk nonsense.”
Everyone jumped to their feet, staring in shock at Lance.
“Lance, what the hell?” Dylan cried, clutching his jaw.
“He’s drunk,” Eugene said quickly, stepping in. “A few of you, take Dylan to the hospital to get checked out. I’ll take Lance next door to sober up.”
Eugene dragged Lance into the adjacent private room. The moment the door closed, Lance shoved him away. He fiddled with a lighter, a cold smile on his face. “So, Eugene, when did you start having feelings for Jessica?”
A chill went down Eugene’s spine.
