On the Ruins of His Regret I Soar novel Chapter 22

She was utterly alone.

Just then, someone in the crowd shouted, “It’s Mr. George! The real Mr. George is in the hospital parking lot!”

The paparazzi knew a bigger story when they heard one. The enigmatic Mr. George, whose face was a complete mystery to the public, was a far greater prize. Snapping a photo of him would be the scoop of the year. The Smiths were a wealthy family, but compared to the Georges, they were small fry.

Instantly, the pack abandoned Jessica and sprinted toward the parking garage.

Gasping for a breath of fresh air, Jessica hurried to the hospital room. She stopped at the door, peering through the small window.

Inside, Catherine Brown was gently spoon-feeding Lance soup. Their daughter, Amy, sat in a little ride-on car, watching them with a happy smile. It was a perfect, heartwarming scene. Jessica felt like an intruder, afraid that walking in would shatter the peace.

So, she didn’t knock.

She kicked the door open.

With a loud bang, the heavy door slammed against the wall, then rebounded with a groan. Catherine shrieked in fright, nearly dropping the bowl. In a split second, Lance caught her hand, steadying it.

He glanced at Jessica, his voice cold. “I thought you weren’t coming. Playing hard to get?” He released Catherine’s hand and turned his gaze to the window.

Catherine placed the soup on the nightstand. “Jessica, I know you’re angry that Lance won’t fund your studio, but you can’t just drug him! Do you have any idea how dangerous that is for a man? The whole world knows now. You’ve completely humiliated him. You went too far.”
