On the Ruins of His Regret I Soar novel Chapter 23

A burden? In his eyes, that’s all she was?

Lance saw the flicker of shock and pain on her face, and for a split second, his resolve wavered. But only for a second.

“You’ve been disconnected from the world for five years,” he continued. “The only place for you now is at home, as a stay-at-home wife. No company is going to take a chance on a five-year gap in your resume, no matter how prestigious your degree is.”

Jessica took a deep breath, trying to cage her emotions. There was no point in arguing. They were getting a divorce; soon he’d be a stranger. It wasn’t worth it.

She kept telling herself that, but her hand had a mind of its own. It reached for the soup bowl on the nightstand.

She lifted the half-empty bowl and, with all her might, flung its contents directly at his face. The warm broth dripped down his cheeks, a picture of utter humiliation. For a fleeting moment, Jessica felt a surge of satisfaction.

She watched as his face darkened into a thunderous scowl.

“If I’m so worthless,” she shot back, taking a step away, “then why blacklist me? Why go to such lengths to destroy any chance I have of working? If I’m as useless as you say, then what was the point of all this?”

After her final word, she instinctively brushed a strand of hair from her face.

Suddenly, Lance shot up from the bed. Thinking he was about to retaliate, Jessica scrambled back, but he was too fast. His hand clamped around her wrist, the grip so tight it felt like her skin would tear. He slammed her against the wall, his other hand sweeping her hair aside, revealing a faint hickey on the pale skin of her neck.
