Catherine smiled softly and sat down next to Lance, noticing the deep furrows in his brow. "Daniel knows what he did, so of course he's not going to press charges against Jessica for injuring him. But when I was there, he and his wife were having a huge fight. Apparently, Daniel really did have a thing for Jessica. His wife claims he once got drunk and called out Jessica's name while holding her hand."

Lance's mind flashed back to Eugene. Even though Eugene had denied it, Lance knew better. He was sure Dylan hadn't been lying; Eugene had feelings for Jessica too. And now Daniel Gates. It was almost unbelievable. He'd never noticed how popular Jessica was.

He took a deep breath. "Catherine, could you look after Amy tonight?"

Catherine nodded.

Lance grabbed his car keys and stood up.

"Lance, where are you going?" she asked quickly. "Are you going to see Jessica?"

A flicker of conflict crossed his eyes before he gave a barely perceptible nod. Catherine bit her lip. She wanted to protest, but she knew she had no right. All she could do was watch him leave, a wave of disappointment washing over her.

She went to check on Amy, who was lying on her bed looking miserable. "My mommy said she doesn't want me anymore."

Catherine gently stroked her hand. "Isn't having me enough for you?"

Amy looked up at her. "Mommy Catherine, will you always be nice to me?"

"Of course, silly," Catherine said with a smile. "I'll always be this nice to you."

"What did Mr. Smith say?" Melissa asked.

Catherine had no intention of discussing her private life with Melissa. She could know all of Melissa's secrets, but Melissa would not know hers. "The usual," she said dismissively. "Did your husband say anything?"

"Daniel was the only one who knew I brought him that drink," Melissa said confidently. "As long as he doesn't say anything, no one will ever know. And he won't. Jerry is completely in the dark."

"That's good," Catherine said, relieved.

"Jerry said if I behave, he'll let me work at his company. Once I'm in, I'll find every opportunity to crush Jessica's little startup."
