Lance hesitated. "I was talking about the importance of a stable family environment."
Jessica just shook her head.
"Catherine can be good to Amy, but she can't replace a real mother," he pressed.
Jessica smiled wryly. "Don't worry, that'll be solved once you and Catherine get married."
Marriage? To Catherine? Lance couldn't believe those words had just come out of Jessica's mouth, so calmly and matter-of-factly. A sharp pain shot through his chest.
"You want me to marry another woman?" he asked, his voice strained.
"She's not just another woman," Jessica scoffed. "She's your true love, the woman you've been pining for all these years. You two are a match made in heaven."
With that, she slammed the door shut and walked away without a backward glance, her lone figure disappearing into the silent house. Through the ornate ironwork of the gate, Lance watched her go. He slammed his fist against the frame. This wasn't what he wanted. He hadn't come here to fight. But lately, it seemed that's all they ever did.
He returned to his car, feeling utterly defeated, and called Eugene. "Let's get a drink."
At the bar, Eugene looked at Lance's miserable state and sighed. "Is this about Jessica or Catherine?"
Lance gave him a wary look.
"Relax," Eugene said, holding up his hands. "I'm getting engaged next month."
"But what did Jessica ever do to Catherine?" Eugene countered. "Have you ever stopped to think that while you were making things up to Catherine, you were causing immense pain to Jessica? Was she not innocent in all of this? By your logic, doesn't that make Jessica just as pitiful as Catherine was back then?"
Lance froze. He had never looked at it from that angle before.
"If you regret it, you still have a chance," Eugene said with a smile. "Lance, we've been friends since we were kids. I don't want to see Amy grow up without her mom."
"She's completely given up on me," Lance said, his gaze downcast.
"You want to win her back? Have you already forgotten how she stood by you, year after year? You've only been trying for a few days."
