On the Ruins of His Regret I Soar novel Chapter 290

“The investigation is still ongoing,” the policewoman said, trying to calm her. “Try not to worry just yet.”

Jessica nodded silently.

Rebecca didn’t find out what had happened until the next morning. She rushed to the police station just as the test results for the leftover cupcakes came in.

There was nothing wrong with them. The four children hadn’t suffered from food poisoning; they had experienced an allergic reaction to peanut butter in the frosting. With no evidence of poisoning, Jessica was cleared of all suspicion and released.

Rebecca was waiting for her outside. She ran over and grabbed Jessica’s hand.

“I’m heading to the hospital,” Jessica explained before Rebecca could ask. “I need to discuss compensation with the parents. We can’t let this get to the point where they hire lawyers; it would be bad for the company.”

“I’ll take you,” Rebecca said immediately.

In the car, Jessica rubbed her temples. “I was worried about allergies, especially with so many kids at the party. That’s why I used little chocolate tags to label the ones with peanuts.”

Rebecca took a deep breath and raised her voice. “No one wanted this to happen. But now that it has, we need to handle it in the best way possible, and that doesn't involve violence. We live in a society governed by laws. Right now, you are the victims and can seek compensation. But the moment you resort to violence—whether out of anger or pain for your children—you lose that advantage.”

The parents exchanged glances and eventually pushed forward a representative: a middle-aged man with glasses who had the calm demeanor of a government employee.

Sure enough, he began with official-sounding poise. “We are clear on the sequence of events, as I’m sure you are. There is no dispute that our four children became ill after eating the cupcakes you provided. Do you agree?”

Jessica nodded. “My cupcakes contained peanuts, and unfortunately, four children had an allergic reaction. I did include warning labels, but it seems they were not seen. I am prepared to cover your children’s medical expenses and compensate for their distress. I don’t have any proof right now of who removed the labels. I understand your pain; your children have suffered through no fault of their own, and my heart goes out to them. I will continue to investigate the matter of the missing labels on my own, but I won’t drag you into it. So please, tell me what you need.”
