But his plea was useless.
The ballroom doors opened again, and the two men Anthony had mentioned walked in. Both were in professional attire, carrying old-fashioned briefcases. They stood there like the very embodiment of the law, radiating an aura of authority that silenced the room.
Most of the guests were business partners of the Brown family, with little concern for their reputation or losses. All they wanted was a good show, a scandal to gossip about, and they watched with rapt attention.
Kevin Brown’s face was a sickly shade of gray. He stumbled down from the platform, nearly falling before catching his balance. He ran to Jessica, his voice low but seething with anger. “What the hell do you think you’re doing? I am your father! Does it make you happy to see me humiliated in front of everyone? If the Brown family becomes a laughingstock, do you think you’ll escape it? Whether you admit it or not, you are a Brown. We rise and fall together. When I’m shamed today, so are you!”
“If your mother were alive to see you making a scene at someone else’s wedding, she’d die of shame! Your mother valued decency above all else. Everything she did was to foster goodwill. Are you honoring her memory by going against everything she stood for?”
Jessica’s gaze turned to ice. A moment ago, it had been mocking amusement, but the mention of her mother ignited a cold fury. “I am doing this to get justice for my mother. If she knew what I was doing, she would be proud of me!”
The two officials stepped onto the stage, and Anthony handed them the file.
The captain shot Kevin a look. “The truck driver who killed them was named Oliver Mitchell. He was thirty years old and not from around here. According to his statement, he was facing termination from his job and had been drinking to cope. He’d had nearly a whole bottle of hard liquor when he got a call from a supplier. Desperate for one last paycheck, he drove drunk, and the tragedy occurred.”
“That’s right,” Kevin said. “I remember it clearly. As tragic as his situation was, Aiden and Amelia’s was worse. I couldn’t bring myself to forgive him.”
The police captain walked up to Kevin. “Mr. Brown, did you know that Oliver Mitchell and Lucas Charles were from the same hometown?”
