On the Ruins of His Regret I Soar novel Chapter 38

Jessica fell silent. “Well… then please thank him for me.”

The lines on his forehead deepened. “He was helping me.”

She was at a loss for words. After a moment, she said earnestly, “Then I should thank you even more.”

“Save it,” he said coldly.

She opened her mouth to say something else, but her phone started ringing. She reached for it, but it was on the far nightstand, just out of her grasp. She looked at George pleadingly.

He leaned over her, his body pressing down slightly as he stretched across to grab the phone. For a brief, dizzying moment, she was acutely aware of the hard muscle of his torso against her, the sheer power he held in check. It was over in a second. He grabbed the phone and tossed it to her, straightening up so quickly she wondered if she had imagined it.

“Thanks,” she mumbled, answering the call. It was the property manager.

“We already agreed—” she started, assuming he was calling about the fees.

“Ms. Brown, do you know what kind of trouble you’ve caused?” the manager interrupted, his voice sharp. “That apartment isn’t yours! You can’t just live there because you know the door code!”

Jessica shot upright, yanking at the IV line. A line of red blood snaked back up the tube, but she barely noticed.

“What are you talking about?” she demanded. “Of course it’s my property! My mother left it to me!”

“Do you have the deed?” the manager retorted.

“Yes, but it’s at my family’s home. I can go to the county office tomorrow and get a new copy to show you.”

The manager laughed. “How long are you going to keep up this charade? We’ve already seen the deed, Ms. Brown. The owner is listed as Kevin Brown, not you. I suggest you come and collect your belongings before we throw them in the trash.”
