Gabriel was only a year older than her. They had been inseparable. After his parents died in a car crash when he was two, Jessica’s mother had raised him as her own. They were as close as any biological siblings.
But now, he stood before her, pointing a finger in her face, asking why she wasn’t dead.
A bitter laugh escaped her as she fought back tears. Ignoring Gabriel, she turned to the property manager. “What did you mean on the phone?”
The manager gestured toward Gabriel with a dismissive wave at Jessica. “Ms. Brown, we’ve packed your things. The owner of this property is Kevin Brown. You’ve been squatting here for days. If Mr. Brown hadn’t clarified the situation, we’d still be in the dark!”
“That’s a lie!” Jessica’s voice was strong and clear. “This is my mother’s apartment! It’s my inheritance! I am the sole owner!”
Gabriel sneered and produced the property deed, holding it open for her to see. “See for yourself. Black and white. It says the owner of this apartment is Kevin Brown. It has nothing to do with you.”
Jessica’s control finally snapped. She lunged, trying to grab the deed. “Impossible! This is fake! It can’t be real!”
