On the Ruins of His Regret I Soar novel Chapter 84

Catherine’s reason for being here today was painfully obvious.

Jessica coolly averted her gaze.

Catherine lowered her voice. "You two haven't had a sex life in a long time, have you? A man's boredom with a woman always starts in the bedroom. Lance has probably lost all desire for you, hasn't he? It's quite pathetic, really. So young, yet deprived of a man's touch. Look at you—pale and thin, like you're malnourished. He has a gala tomorrow night, by the way. He’s already invited me to be his date. I suppose he finds you too embarrassing to be seen with."

She glanced at the simple white t-shirt Jessica was wearing, which looked like something from a clearance rack. Catherine sneered. Isabella Charles had a golden retriever at the Brown estate, and even she wouldn't dress that dog in a twenty-dollar shirt. Yet here was Mrs. Smith, wearing something a dog wouldn't even be caught in.

A smirk played on Catherine's lips. How amusing. Mrs. Smith was worth less than a dog.

"Jessica," she continued, "if you're really that broke, you could always go home and beg. I'm sure someone would spare you enough money to buy a decent outfit. You can't go out looking like that. You're an embarrassment to Dad."

Jessica stopped abruptly and grabbed Catherine's wrist.

Catherine met her gaze, her eyes still glinting with defiance. Now that she knew how much she mattered to Lance, she was bolder than ever.

With a sharp tug, Jessica ripped open the collar of Catherine’s dress. "What’s more embarrassing? My clothes, or you seducing a married man and parading around with the evidence all over your body? Why don't you go show Grandma those marks? Do you dare? Catherine, if you’re going to be a whore, at least have the guts to own it."
