Once She Came Like a Flash novel Chapter 33

**Chapter 33**

At that very moment, Luke strolled over, a casual demeanor accompanying him as he extended an open bottle of water toward Jasper. “Here you go, boss,” he said, his tone light and easygoing.

Jasper, with an effortless grace, removed the cigarette from his lips and accepted the bottle. He took a sip, his actions imbued with a quiet sophistication that seemed to elevate even the simplest of gestures. The way he drank water was almost poetic, a display of refinement that caught the attention of those around him.

For a brief moment, silence enveloped the group, everyone’s eyes fixed on Jasper. Then, as the reality of the situation began to dawn on them, a few exchanged glances, their expressions morphing into barely concealed mockery directed at Kayla. It was painfully evident that she was making a spectacle of herself, her attempts at flirting with Jasper falling flat. Despite the obvious lack of interest from him, she remained blissfully unaware.

This wasn’t the first time women had thrown themselves at Jasper, nor would it be the last. The unspoken consensus among the onlookers was clear: no man desired a woman who appeared desperate. Yet, the room was filled with a heavy silence; no one dared to voice their thoughts aloud.

Kayla’s smile began to falter, her demeanor shifting as her expression darkened. Her fingers gripped the water bottle tightly, knuckles whitening as the tension radiated from her. To anyone observing, it was painfully apparent just how flustered and mortified she felt.

Julian, the eldest scion of the Spencer family, stood nearby, a man who was accustomed to admiration and privilege, much like a beloved celebrity in Harbor City. He had never found himself in such an awkward position before, nor had Kayla. But the man they were both fixated on was no ordinary individual. This was Jasper Zeller, the golden child of the Zeller family, the wealthiest lineage in the capital. Even if Julian felt a swell of annoyance, he had no option but to swallow his pride and maintain his composure.

“I actually am feeling a bit thirsty…” Julian began, his voice trailing off as he noticed a hand reaching out and snatching the water bottle directly from Kayla’s grasp.

“I’m thirsty too. Thanks, Kayla,” Adam interjected, a relaxed smile gracing his features. He unscrewed the cap with a practiced ease, taking several generous gulps before handing the bottle back to her.

“Appreciate it,” he added casually, his tone light, as if he had just defused a tense situation with his charm.

In an instant, the awkwardness that had hung over the room began to dissipate. The atmosphere shifted, faces softening as the group resumed their previous banter, acting as if nothing had transpired.

Renee observed the scene unfold with a quiet contemplation. A flicker of thought crossed her mind: had she been the one to deliver water to Jasper earlier, would she have found herself in Kayla’s shoes, feeling the sting of humiliation?

Most likely.

Would Adam have come to her rescue in the same manner he just did for Kayla?

The answer was painfully clear—no.
