**Chapter 65**
“She can’t have children?”
Kayla’s eyes sparkled with a mix of disbelief and excitement. Her heart raced as if it had just been given a jolt of electricity. The thrill coursed through her veins, prompting her to seize the cleaning lady’s hand in an enthusiastic grip.
“Are you serious right now?” she exclaimed, her voice barely containing her eagerness.
The cleaner, with a knowing smile, extended her hand expectantly. “Absolutely. I might not have caught every detail, but that bit was crystal clear.”
Kayla chuckled, her laughter a melody of triumph. “Well, here you go then!”
With a flourish, she pulled out a crisp thousand-dollar bill and pressed it into the woman’s palm, her excitement bubbling over. Without a moment’s hesitation, she turned on her heel and strode away, her mind already racing ahead to her next move.
Once she was a safe distance away, she dialed a number, her heart pounding with anticipation. “I need you to dig deep and find out which hospital Renee Whitley visited for any gynecological exams. Yes, every single one in Harborview City. I want a complete list!”
The voice on the other end responded promptly, “Yes, miss.”
But just as she was about to hang up, another thought struck her.
“Wait,” she said, her tone shifting. “The situation on Seraph Island—what’s the latest? I need to know what happened when Renee was trapped underwater. Our contact there hasn’t checked in for over a week. Do you think he might have been compromised?”
“What?” Kayla’s body tensed, a shiver creeping down her spine as dread settled in. Her expression turned stormy, frustration boiling over. “Useless! You can’t even keep track of one person!”
In a fit of agitation, she raked her fingers through her hair, pacing back and forth as her thoughts spiraled. But then, in a flash, inspiration struck her like a lightning bolt.
“Listen, I need you to buy something for me immediately. Have it delivered to the Nurture Children’s Welfare Center. And do it fast! I want it there as soon as possible!”
With that directive given, she ended the call, leaning against the wall for support. Her gaze drifted toward Renee, who was blissfully unaware of the storm brewing around her. Kayla’s lips curled into a whisper, “Renee, you brought this upon yourself.”
The secrets of Seraph Island were not to be exposed. If the truth ever surfaced, Adam would never forgive her, and that thought sent a wave of panic through her.
