The moment Yvonne arrived at the office, she was caught off guard by the unexpected news swirling through the building.
After what happened with Anna yesterday, no one dared to gossip openly at work. It was only Nydia who sidled up to Yvonne’s desk, lowering her voice as she whispered, “Yvonne, you went to your class reunion last night, didn’t you? I heard two girls from your class were jealous and tried to hurt you, but they mistook Ms. White for you. She ended up getting disfigured. Are you okay?”
Yvonne’s chest tightened with unease. “That’s absurd. Where did you hear something like that?” The rumor sounded even more disturbing the second time, and a sense of foreboding crept over her.
Xenia White—an heiress with that kind of background—if she really was disfigured because someone took her for Yvonne…
Yvonne didn’t even want to think about the consequences.
“It was all over the news last night,” Nydia continued, her usual bubbly tone replaced by genuine concern. “I’m just worried, you know how Xenia is. What if she comes after you?”
“Whoever started this mess should take responsibility. Why would she come looking for me?” Yvonne replied, trying to sound unconcerned.
But inside, she couldn’t shake her anxiety.
“I saw that the people behind it have already been arrested.”
Nydia nodded. “Yeah, it was your high school classmate, right? The one who owns that beauty clinic chain? Her stores are all shut down now. The White family doesn’t mess around—once they decided to act, those two women barely escaped with their lives.”
Yvonne’s expression turned serious as she nodded along.
It was their own doing, she thought. You reap what you sow.
She remembered how, just last night, those women had tried to humiliate her. She’d only answered back with a few words, but she never imagined they’d go so far as to plot real harm.
A chill ran down her spine, cold sweat prickling at her back. Still, she told herself, this was just their comeuppance for being malicious.
The thought weighed heavily on her.
Nydia was right—people like Xenia had power ordinary folks couldn’t hope to fight. If she tried to ask Marico for protection, and Xenia learned about their connection, things could get even worse.
Meanwhile, at the hospital—
Xenia awoke after surgery, her face swathed in layers of white gauze. The moment she opened her eyes, she was frantic and furious.
When her best friend Cornelia told her what had happened, Xenia lost control.
“I want those two women to suffer for this—and that Yvonne, too! None of them deserve to walk away from this!” Xenia’s eyes were bloodshot and wild, the only part of her face visible beneath the bandages, making her look almost inhuman.
“Xenia, don’t get worked up,” Cornelia soothed, her voice gentle but firm. “Those women will get what they deserve, trust me. For now, you need to focus on healing. Yves has already found the best reconstructive surgeon in the country for your operation. Once you recover, you’ll be even more beautiful than before. You just have to be patient, okay?”
