At nine-thirty, Yvonne pulled into the parking lot and hurried upstairs.
This time, she didn’t wait for Marico—she headed straight for the elevator on her own.
Marico lingered in the back seat of the Rolls-Royce, watching Yvonne’s figure disappear. He seemed to still savor the passion they’d shared in the bathroom before leaving the house. He wasn’t quite ready to let the memory go.
Despite Yvonne’s repeated prodding, they’d ended up running half an hour late. Luckily, today the entire floor’s departments were gathered for an impromptu meeting in the main conference room, and attendance wasn’t being taken.
Yvonne slipped in through the back door and found a seat in the last row.
Nydia was there too. “Yvonne, you’re late today? Did something happen at home?”
“Yeah, kind of.” Yvonne was still a bit breathless from rushing, and embarrassment brought a soft pink to her normally porcelain cheeks, making her look more delicate than usual.
“Same here. Thank goodness for no attendance today—my perfect attendance bonus is safe.” Nydia grinned, relieved.
“We really lucked out.”
“I heard Mr. Hamilton’s doing a surprise inspection, but he’s only checking in on management. Us little folks are safe for now. Look at Linda—clearly her report didn’t land well.”
Nydia chuckled under her breath, not noticing how Yvonne pressed her lips together nervously at the mention of Mr. Hamilton.
So it was him. No wonder he’d said he’d take care of her being late. She was grateful it was only half an hour; any longer and she might’ve missed the whole morning.
All that trouble, just to fix a tie. She hadn’t expected things to spiral the way they did. Even now, thinking about it, her cheeks grew warmer with embarrassment.
“You left so quickly yesterday—I didn’t get to show you this.” Nydia leaned in and discreetly pulled up a photo for Yvonne to see.
It was a picture of a young man, handsome and refined, wearing a windbreaker and posing on a hiking trail. He looked like someone who genuinely enjoyed life.
They joined the crowd filtering out of the conference room, but Grace caught them from behind. “Keep it low-key, everyone—our team’s project just got torn to shreds. We really messed up.”
“Our biggest project hit a snag. The other two teams already finished ahead of schedule,” Grace whispered, right as Linda marched past them, files in hand and a stormy look on her face.
Grace instantly fell silent, signaling the others to do the same.
Back at her desk, Yvonne found the whole office had the tense, heavy atmosphere of an oncoming storm.
About ten minutes later, Linda emerged from her office, clutching a stack of papers, her expression icy.
“Yvonne! You’ve been with the company two years now. How are you still making such rookie mistakes?”
