“Let’s dig in, then. Marico, happy birthday, and congratulations on your wedding.” Kent raised his wine glass and toasted Marico.

At the Rolex boutique, Yves stepped out of the car and hurried into the VIP lounge, where Xenia was already waiting.
As soon as she saw Yves, Xenia’s previously annoyed expression melted into a charming smile. “Yves!”
Only in the presence of Xenia did Yves’s usually brooding, distant face ever brighten. He strode over at once. “Xenia, what did you need me for?”
Xenia immediately tugged him down to sit beside her, looping her arm through his. “So, I just spotted a watch that I think would look perfect on you.”
She took out the watch she’d wrestled away from Yvonne earlier and, with a playful flourish, fastened it on Yves’s wrist herself.
“Isn’t it nice? I picked it out just for you.” Xenia held onto his arm, her affection unmistakable.
Yves, already half in love with her, glanced down at the watch, feeling a surge of gratitude and emotion.
“I really like it. Thank you,” he said, gazing at her with barely restrained affection.
“Pick anything you like here—anything at all. My treat.” Yves’s voice was gentle.
The Collins family was every bit as wealthy and powerful as his own.
Of course, Xenia understood how Yves felt about her, but she’d never made their relationship explicit—she was content to keep him on a string, letting him do things for her as she pleased.
“I got a birthday present for Marico. Would you mind giving it to him for me, under your name?” Xenia picked up a paper bag, her eyes sparkling as she looked at Yves.
Yves’s smile faded almost instantly.
Xenia gave his arm an affectionate shake, pouting a little. “Please, Yves? Will you do it for me?”
Yves, utterly helpless in the face of her soft pleading, gave in.
“Alright. I’ll pass it on for you.”
