Reborn to Marry My Best Friend's Uncle novel Chapter 49

Christian's arms were still trembling as he held Annie, but the look he shot at Michael was downright icy.

Michael instantly understood the meaning behind that look. Cold sweat broke out across his back. He knew that it was over. Christian's identity wouldn't stay hidden after this.

Quick on his feet, Michael forced himself into a professional, mildly surprised expression and hurried over. "Mr. Parker, what are you doing here?"

His tone was perfectly measured and loud enough for Annie to hear.

"We received news about a landslide in this area. The CEO was worried that it might affect the village our foundation supports, so he sent us to check on the situation." His explanation made sense. Half of the doubt in Annie's heart vanished.

So, that was why.

Annie nodded, her voice still weak. "The CEO of the Parker Group… He seems like a decent person."

Christian stiffened at the offhanded compliment. He loosened his hold on Annie and let a warm, easy smile return to his face. "Michael, I came for my wife. She's safe now, so we're heading back."

"Yes, Mr. Parker." Michael nodded and stepped aside at once.

Christian took her cold hand and guided her toward the glossy black Bentley. He opened the door, shielding her head with his hand as he helped her in.

Only when the Bentley finally disappeared did Michael exhale shakily and wipe the sweat from his forehead. For a moment back there, he truly thought that his career was finished.

A rescue team captain walked up, his eyes following the taillights. "Michael, isn't that Mr. Parker's car?"

Michael's expression darkened, and he shot the man a glare. "Shut up and get back to work."
