Suzanna had been standing at the door for ages with no response from inside. She wondered if Christian and Annie were home yet.

She frowned and reached for the doorbell again when the lock finally clicked.

The door opened to reveal Christian's face, which was as dark as the bottom of a burnt pot.

She jumped at the sight, then felt irritation rise immediately. "Uncle Chris, why didn't you open the door? I thought something happened to you two!"

She complained as she craned her neck to look inside. "Where's Ann? How is she? Is she hurt?"

Christian stepped aside to let her in, the cold air still clinging to him. Every time he closed his eyes, he would see the landslide swallowing Annie whole. The fear hadn't faded at all.

"She's fine. She's just showering," he said, his voice still raspy.

"That's good to hear." Suzanna let out a long breath, patting her chest. That day's events had almost scared her half to death.

She plopped onto the couch, then suddenly remembered Annie's unfinished sentence over the phone. The latter had been saying something about Christian acting strangely this morning.

The running water behind the bathroom door muffled their voices enough. She leaned toward him and lowered her voice, her face lighting up at the thought of gossip. "Uncle Chris, what did you do to upset Ann this morning?"

Christian didn't answer. He walked to the counter, poured himself a glass of water, and drank in silence.

That silence set off every alarm bell in Suzanna's mind. Men changed after getting married. Was Christian another stereotype fulfilled?
