Steam fogged up the bathroom, turning the mirror into a sheet of white. Warm water ran down Annie's skin, easing the tension. When she finally turned off the shower, she let out a long breath and instinctively reached toward the counter for her pajamas.
Her hand froze mid-air when she realized that there was nothing. That was bad. She had forgotten to take her clothes with her!
The towel wrapped around her was already soaked through, clinging to her. There was no way she could step out like this. She certainly couldn't walk out there bare. The thought alone sent heat rushing to her face.
The bedroom and bathroom were connected. When she had entered the bathroom earlier, Christian had still been in the living room. He shouldn't have come back to the bedroom yet… right?
She listened carefully. It was quiet outside. She bit her lip, feeling hesitant. "Christian?"
She called softly, "Are you… out there?"
Nobody answered her.
She waited a while, and there was still no response. So, she figured that he wasn't there.
A wave of relief washed over her, immediately followed by panic. She didn't know what she should do next. Just as she was still debating whether to risk a dash to the closet, two gentle knocks sounded on the bathroom door.
Annie nearly jumped out of her skin, and her heart skipped a beat. It turned out that Christian was there. Then why hadn't he answered her earlier?
"Ann, I'm facing away from the door. It's fine." Christian's deep voice came through the door. It was low and restrained.
Annie's face burned even hotter. How did he know that she didn't have clothes? Could he read minds now? Had he been standing outside the whole time?
Her thoughts turned into a complete scramble.
She tiptoed to the door and unlocked it. The door cracked open just enough for her arm to pass through it.
A set of clean cotton pajamas was immediately pressed into her hand.
She quickly grabbed them, and her fingers brushed against his warm palm. She yanked her hand back and slammed the door shut.
