One of Annie's former colleagues, who had once been on fairly good terms with her, sneered, "Look who's that. It's the star designer, Annie. You're here enjoying your date while Roxanne is in prison. Life must be pretty nice for you."
Annie's smile faded, replaced with a look of indifference. Christian tightened his grip on her hand. His dark eyes swept over the group warningly.
The woman, noticing Annie's silence, pressed her advantage. "Cat got your tongue? Roxanne is the reason why you've gotten so far. How can you live yourself after what happened to her?"
Another one of Annie's former colleagues chimed in, "Exactly! Roxanne trusted you, and this is how you repay her? You're nothing but a selfish backstabber!"
Others quickly joined in, their words striking her like piercing stones.
They only remembered the fall of Mosaic Studio and Roxanne's misfortune, completely forgetting who had first betrayed Annie. Human hearts were indifferent, and often cruelly so.
Annie almost laughed, not bothering to defend herself. After all, it was pointless to argue with people who only believed in what they wanted.
Christian opened his mouth to rebuke them, but Annie's gentle press on his arm and a shake of her head told him to stay silent. This was her battle to fight, and she would settle it on her own.
Annie looked at their resentful expressions calmly. Her voice was calm but unmistakably clear. "You all know who started playing dirty first."
A sneer curved on her lips. "I've always returned favors, and I deal with enemies the same way."
Without sparing them another glance, she took Christian's hand and turned to leave. "Let's go home."
Annie's former colleagues were left speechless. They froze in place and watched as Christian and Annie walked away. The chill of the night wind only made their flushed faces feel hotter with shame.
The ride home was quiet. Annie leaned her head against the window, silently watching the neon lights blur past. Her good mood had been completely ruined, leaving only exhaustion and frustration in its wake.
