Reagan
After washing off the blood and looking at the horrible looking mate mark that looks like a vampire tried to rip my throat out, I put on comfortable clothes that Quinn got for me.
“I want to talk to the man who was standing in front of ...” It doesn’t feel right to say it, but it’s true. “My mate. Do you know who he is?”
I watch my mother’s eyes go unfocused. “Your father says he’s Alpha Kieran’s Gamma.”
Alpha Kieran. I didn’t even know the name of the man who marked me.
“I’m assuming he’s from out west? Is that why he arrived so late?”
“Your brother asked the patrols when they arrived. They said they’d just arrived, indicating that they had been driving for two days,” my mother says.
“What can we do, Reagan?” Malin asks me.
“Whatever you need, we’re here for you,” Quinn adds.
“I’m not really sure what I need. Maybe a drink. But first, I want to talk to the Gamma.”
I look at myself in the mirror, pulling the shirt up so my hideous mate mark doesn’t show. Then I pull my hair over my shoulder to hide what can’t be hidden by the shirt. Quinn and Malin were awesome at helping me to get the pins and flowers out of my hair so I could let it fall down my back.
I take a deep breath and stand up straight. “Let’s go.”
I head out of the room that used to be mine before Rich became Alpha. It no longer looks like my room, having been turned into a playroom for Rich and Emlyn’s pups. But I’m sure it’s because it was mine at one time that my mother led me here.
When I get downstairs, I smell him. Alayla whines in my head, sad once again that our mate hurt us like that.
‘What do you want to do with him, Alayla?’
‘I don’t know,’ she says, and her voice is so sad that it makes my heart feel like it’s going to break.
I follow my mate’s scent to the hallway where Rich and Emlyn have their offices. There, my father is waiting for me. He opens his arms, and I walk into his hug.
“Whatever you want, whatever you need, I’ll support you,” he says, holding me tightly.
“Thanks, Dad. What do you think of the Gamma?”
“He’s loyal. As much as I hate to say it, that means something. I’m sure he’ll tell you what he told me.”
I look up at my father. “Do you believe him?”
“Are we talking about the Gamma or your mate?”
I smile. “Let’s start with the Gamma.”
“Yes, I believe him.”
I turn, smelling the strange scent mixed with Emlyn’s peach scent. They must have put him in her office. I step inside and see the man from before, pacing.
“Luna,” he breathes, stopping his nervous pacing.
“I’m not your Luna,” I tell him.
He presses his lips together and looks down, clasping his hands together tightly.
“What’s your name, Gamma?”
“Elias, Alpha. Please don’t reject him,” he says, barely above a whisper. When he looks up at me, his eyes are full of love and fear for the man he’s protecting.
“Tell me why I shouldn’t,” I say, gesturing for him to sit. He does, but he’s at the edge of his seat, as if all of his nervous energy won’t allow him to sit still for long. I sit across from him. I don’t exactly mirror his stance, but I don’t lounge back in the chair either.
“I don’t know what they told you but ...”
“Nothing,” I say.
He nods before taking a deep breath and forcing himself to be calm. He looks down at his hands that are clasped so tightly I’m surprised his bones aren’t snapping.
