I was put in a room with Elias. We were given food, two beds, and two guards at the door. I told Elias to get some sleep. The man looks like he hasn’t slept in months and he probably hasn’t. I, however, can't sleep.
Unlike before when I couldn’t sleep because Samson was being loud and obsessive in my head, now I’m trying to figure out how to make sure that my mate decides to accept me. Samson isn’t prowling around in my head like before, but he isn’t exactly settled either.
I wanted to walk off the stress of the day, but when I opened the door, the guards had politely but firmly told me to return to my room. Since I’m sure Samson would try to find Reagan again, I do as they say and continue to pace.
“Are you okay, Alpha?” Elias says, sitting up in his bed and rubbing his eyes.
“How bad is the pack, Elias?” I ask him.
The silence in the room speaks volumes.
“That bad, huh? Is it all because of me?”
“No. But the lack of leadership has been ... a problem. One that I hope will be rectified now. Is our Luna coming home with us?”
“Yes, but she has conditions. She hasn’t accepted me yet. But whatever you told her made her think that I need to be home, getting the pack back in order.”
“That would be a good thing, Alpha. Your leadership is much needed.”
“What am I walking into, Elias?” I say, turning to look at him across the room.
“Without leadership, some of the more vocal pack members have become verbally aggressive and have begun bullying the omegas. I stop it when I see it, but between Beta Markus and I, we usually have one of us watching you to make sure that ... nothing happens. And there’s only so many places the other can be and still monitor our borders to ensure that we aren’t attacked.”
I scrub my hands over my face. That is not how the pack was the last time I remember it. But who knows how long it's been since the pack was the way that I remember it. Then another thought hits me.
“Did I sleep with any of our she-wolves?”
He looks at me a long moment before answering.
“Samson was as likely to have sex as he was to try and kill a she-wolf if she approached. At first, I didn’t realize that it was him and not you, but after you nearly killed Olivia, I didn’t let any she-wolves near you. Beta Markus didn’t feel it was his duty to keep Samson from sleeping with a she-wolf if he chose to.”
“Do you know how many of our pack members I slept with?” I ask, dreading the answer.
“I don’t know. Like I said, we were struggling to make sure the pack continued to run.”
‘Samson, what the fuck were you doing sleeping with she-wolves from our pack?’
‘I needed an outlet, they gave me one,’ he growls.
‘Let me explain something to you. If she rejects us, we die. You could have risked everything by doing that. I swear to the Moon Goddess, Samson, if you so much as LOOK at another she-wolf now that we’ve found Reagan...”
“I wouldn’t. I never wanted any of them. They were simply a means of taking the edge off. I want her. I want our mate. I need her. I need to be close to her. I feel more ... normal when she’s nearby. And before you ask, yes, I made sure that none of those she-wolves will produce one of our pups.’
‘They better fucking not, because right now, I’d kill your fucking pup to keep my mate,’ I say.
He growls, but it cuts off almost immediately. ‘No you wouldn’t. It’s not who you are.’
Not, it’s not. I wouldn’t kill a pup. But I’ll damn sure do just about anything else to keep our mate.
‘Do you know how long you have before you lose control again?’ I ask him.
