Reagan
I put the address into the GPS and begin driving, watching my family in the rearview mirror as they stand and watch me leave. I drag my focus back to the road when I can no longer see them. I’m not afraid. I know I can handle anything that Kieran, Samson, or the pack throw at me, but that doesn’t change the hollow feeling of loneliness that I get as I get on the interstate and begin heading west. I'm leaving everything that I know and everyone that I love behind. Well, except for Meadow.
Kieran pulls out his phone which is connected to the Bluetooth in the car and dials a number that begins ringing through the vehicle.
“Yes, Alpha?” Elias answers.
“Where did we stop two nights ago? We can stop there tonight.”
“That was about twelve hours away Alpha. I drove fifteen hours the day before. Since we’re not in a huge hurry, we could break the trip into three days.”
“Two is fine,” I tell him.
“I’ve got a place about halfway. I’ll text it to you, Rea,” Meadow says.
I get the address and put that into the GPS. When that’s done, I settle into driving.
“I guess we should use this time to get to know each other, don’t you think?” I ask, looking over Kieran. He is sound asleep.
“Or not,” I murmur. I noticed the dark circles under his eyes last night when I’d talked to him. I’d hoped that me telling him that I’d be returning with him along with him marking me would have given Samson enough to calm him, but he still looks utterly exhausted.
I put my ear bud in and call Meadow.
“How’s it going?” I ask her.
“You mean besides the Gamma here acting like he’s ready to catch his Alpha if you toss him from the car, we’re just fine.”
“That’s not what I’m doing?” I hear Elias say.
“You’re a nervous ball of energy. You need to calm down before I create a rune to make you calm,” she says to him. I smile. Goddess, I love her. I’m so glad she’s coming with me.
“Ask Gamma Elias how long it’s been since Kieran slept.”
She doesn’t ask which I assume means he heard me and she's putting me on speakerphone.
“It’s hard to say, Luna. Sometimes he’d go to bed but we’d find him up wandering around the packhouse at all hours of the night mumbling about needing to find you.”
I ignore that he continues to call me Luna and focus on the other part.
“How often did that happen?” I ask.
“Well, you should probably ask him,” he says, obviously feeling like he’s betraying his Alpha by talking about him.
“I would except he’s sound asleep.”
“He is?” the shock in his voice tells me it’s been far too long since Kieran slept.
“You don’t have to worry about me tossing him out of the car, Gamma. If I wanted to hurt him, I have far better ways of doing it,” I say before hanging up.
The drive takes fourteen hours. We stop several times but Kieran never once wakes up. Each time, Meadow puts a protection spell over him while we use the bathroom and get food, ensuring that no one will try to steal the car or rob him while we’re away. After the first stop, Elias tilts Kieran’s seat back so he's reclining and even that didn’t wake him up.
When we finally arrive at the hotel where Meadow made reservations for us, I’m stiff and practically desperate to let Alaya out so I can stretch my legs. However, we’re too close to the interstate and there aren’t any forests close enough for us to get to.
“Kieran. Kieran, wake up,” I say, gently nudging him.
He jolts awake, looking sleep drunk and disoriented.
“Wh-where are we?”
“The halfway point. You slept all day.”
“I did?”
“You did. Elias has some food for you. He and Meadow are getting our rooms.”
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have fallen asleep on you like that.”
“You obviously needed the sleep. How long has it been since you slept?” I ask as Meadow walks out holding up a room key.
“Too long.”
“Come on, lets get inside. You can eat, shower, and hopefully go back to sleep.”
Meadow knocks on the window and I roll it down. She looks from me to Kieran and back to me. “I got adjoining rooms just in case Samson decided to show his ass and needed a Guardian or a kick ass witch to put it back in line.”
“Is that an offer,” Samson’s deeper voice asks.
