Watching Camila soften toward someone else, Jordan felt jealousy bubbling inside him, impossible to hide. As they walked by, he couldn’t help himself. He reached out and grabbed her hand. “Camila, please, stay with me.”
The desperation hit him hard. Even though she couldn’t recognize either of them, she still trusted Dennis completely. In that moment, Jordan was certain that if he let her walk away now, she might never look back. He couldn’t live with that. His heart made the choice before his head could argue.
Dennis’s eyes locked onto Jordan’s hand, his stare dark and dangerous. He didn’t have to say a word. Aaron moved first, stepping in without hesitation.
Jordan wasn’t ready for the hit and nearly lost his balance. Aaron’s voice was cold and merciless. “Mr. Smith, show some respect. Don’t touch Mrs. Williams. Next time, your legs won’t be the only thing you have to worry about.”
Jordan’s face twisted with anger. Camila, eyes closed, clung tightly to Dennis’s shirt, ignoring Jordan completely. She wouldn’t even look his way. The realization stabbed Jordan right in the chest.
Dennis pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead, trying to comfort her. Then, towering over Jordan, he said quietly, “You better hope Camila is all right. If she isn’t, your family will pay for it.”
With those words, Dennis turned and walked away, carrying Camila out without a glance back.
Once they were outside the Smith villa, Dennis helped Camila into the car. Aaron slid behind the wheel, ready to go.
“Take us to the hospital. Now,” Dennis ordered.
“On it.”
Aaron floored the gas, and they sped off. Camila whimpered in pain the whole way. Dennis just held her close, his face tense and worried, and kept urging Aaron, “Faster. Please, faster.”
Aaron didn’t say a word. The car was already at its limit.
He’d called ahead, so the hospital staff was waiting for them. Twenty minutes later, they arrived. Camila was barely conscious, cold sweat covering her skin. Dennis could only hold her tighter, whispering soothing words.
The specialists rushed her into a thorough exam. The results came back quickly.
A doctor pulled Dennis aside. “There’s a strong sedative in her system, and the dose was extremely high. Her body fights off medication, so the pain’s worse. We also found something else mixed in. We’ll need more time to figure out what.”
