RedFox’s story was a rough one. Aaron listened in silence, feeling a flicker of sympathy, but he knew better than to let it sway him. RedFox had spent years in the shadows, doing terrible things. No matter how hard his life had been, it didn’t erase all the blood on his hands.
Aaron just gave his shoulder a quick pat. “Red Spider was never about doing the right thing. It was just a matter of time before someone took you down. You’re lucky you didn’t hurt my wife. If you help us catch the real culprit, maybe we can work something out for you.”
RedFox nodded, his eyes down, saying nothing.
Back at the house, after Dennis brought Camila home, she couldn’t help but ask, “Dennis, what will happen to RedFox?”
He frowned. “Why are you thinking about him? Why not ask about me? I’ve been searching nonstop, worried sick the whole time.”
Camila melted a little at that. She leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to his cheek, her voice gentle. “You did so much for me. I’m sorry you had to go through all that.”
She really did understand how hard it had been for him. She’d seen the lengths he went to, the people he brought, even military vehicles and helicopters. Pulling off something like that in a foreign country was a huge deal. It meant a lot to her.
Dennis wrapped his arms around her, his voice much softer now. “You don’t need to apologize. Honestly, I should be the one saying sorry. I didn’t keep you safe, and you got taken. If anything had happened to you... I don’t even want to think about it.”
He had never been afraid of anything in his life, but when Camila went missing, fear had hit him hard. Just the thought of losing her had nearly driven him crazy. If she hadn’t come back, he wasn’t sure what he would have done.
He leaned in closer, burying his face in her neck. Camila could feel how tightly he held her, like he was afraid to let go, and her own heart ached at how much he’d been through.
“It’s okay, really,” she whispered. “This time I wasn’t careful enough, but I’ll be more cautious. I promise, I won’t leave you. I’ll take care of myself, so you don’t have to worry about me like this again.”
“Okay,” Dennis said softly, holding her even tighter. For a while, they just stayed like that, drawing comfort from each other.
